Reese Witherspoon's Book Club Pick
A lively, sexy, and thought-provoking work of cultural heritage fiction about community, friendship, and women's lives at all ages--a spicy and alluring mix of Together Tea and Calendar Girls.
Every woman has a secret life . . .
Nikki lives in cosmopolitan West London, where she tends bar at the local pub. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she's spent most of her twenty-odd years distancing herself from the traditional Sikh community of her childhood, preferring a more independent (that is, Western) life. When her father's death leaves the family financially strapped, Nikki, a law school dropout, impulsively takes a job teaching a "creative writing" course at the community center in the beating heart of London's close-knit Punjabi community.
In this heartwarming story of a found family, a miscommunication means the proper Sikh widows who show up are expecting to learn basic English literacy, not the art of short-story writing. When one of the widows finds a book of sexy stories in English and shares it with the class, Nikki realizes that beneath their white dupattas, her students have a wealth of fantasies and memories. Eager to liberate these modest women, she teaches them how to express their untold stories, unleashing creativity of the most unexpected--and exciting--kind.
As more women are drawn to the class, Nikki warns her students to keep their work secret from the Brotherhood, a group of highly conservative young men who have appointed themselves the community's "moral police." But when the widows' gossip turns them into amateur sleuths with shocking insights into the death of a young wife--a modern woman like Nikki--and some of the class erotica is shared among friends, it sparks a scandal that threatens them all.

Absolutely love this book. Went in not looking anything up and absolutely loved it. Refreshing to read and really close to home! Totally recommend
A quick easy fun read! Well written "expose" of a culture very different from mine! Also, very imaginative & funny!
I think the book would have been just as good with out the sexual stories. Just keep it at relationships.
Nikki is a young Punjabi woman caught between Sikh traditions and modern expectations. After dropping out of law school, she moves out and takes a job teaching what she believes will be an English class for widows. However, Nikki quickly realizes that her students have a very different idea of what the class should be. As the story unfolds, themes of arranged marriages, abuse, and even a possible murder emerge. The novel offered an interesting glimpse into a culture I’m not very familiar with and included a few twists and turns, but overall, it was an average read.
A funny satire about the roles of women and men in monotheistic religion and society. It examines the overlap between religion and culture. It is an eye opener into the world of Sikhism and ‘taboo’ subjects, morality, religion, culture, rituals and traditions. At the heart of the story is Nikki, a law school dropout, who has taken up an English tutor role at a Sikh temple. In a comedy of errors, her students (the widows) believe they are coming for story writing lessons.Despite the title, this was emotional and serious. The author explored patriarchy, patriotism, immigration, gender equality/roles.I highly recommend this as an opportunity to explore new perspectives and ideas.
