NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER - "Unforgettable tales of families and lovers--from Haiti to Miami, Brooklyn, and beyond--often struggling with grief, loss, and missed connections." --Vanity Fair - REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK
A Kirkus Reviews Best Fiction Book of the Century
A romance unexpectedly sparks between two wounded friends. A marriage ends for what seem like noble reasons, but with irreparable consequences. A young woman holds on to an impossible dream even as she fights for her survival. Two lovers reunite after unimaginable tragedy, both for their country and in their lives. A baby's christening brings three generations of a family to a precarious dance between old and new. A man falls to his death in slow motion, reliving the defining moments of the life he is about to lose.
Set in locales from Miami and Port-au-Prince to a small unnamed country in the Caribbean and beyond, here are eight emotionally absorbing stories, rich with hard-won wisdom and humanity. At once wide in scope and intimate, Everything Inside explores with quiet power and elegance the forces that pull us together or drive us apart, sometimes in the same searing instant.

Danticat creativity really shines in these dark stories. I love how she was able to change the vantage points and perspectives of the story and still tie everything together. The first four stories, although sad, themed a lack of wisdom. In Dosas, the main character was fooled by her adulterer ex-husband and disloyal friend when she shouldn’t have kept in contact with them in the first place. In The Old Days, the mother was selfish to not have her daughter ever know or meet her father until he died. The Port-Au-Prince Marriage Special was tragic but also very avoidable if the young girl only had wisdom and discernment to not be fooled by a corner store ring and sex. In the last of the first four stories, The Gift, the male protagonist shouldn’t have cheated on his wife nor should his mistress have created the painting to embarrass herself. The last four stories in Danticat were just the unavoidable tragedies of life but beautifully told in different angles and settings. This is definitely a must-read but could be sensitive to those who suffer from PTSD or similar trauma.
Well written. Insightful read.
Read this with my book club, loved every minute of reading.
I read her books long ago. Loved them then. Nice to return and have the same experience with her newer book.
These are thoughtful stories of love, loss & survival, that "sneak up" on you. There's a lot of wisdom, with strong, well developed characters you want to get to know. The powerful pull of Haiti and homeland links stories & characters, sometimes in a surprising way.
