Tuberculosis has been entwined with humanity for millennia. Once romanticized as a malady of poets, today tuberculosis is seen as a disease of poverty that walks the trails of injustice and inequity we blazed for it.
In 2019, author John Green met Henry Reider, a young tuberculosis patient at Lakka Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. John became fast friends with Henry, a boy with spindly legs and a big, goofy smile. In the years since that first visit to Lakka, Green has become a vocal advocate for increased access to treatment and wider awareness of the healthcare inequities that allow this curable, preventable infectious disease to also be the deadliest, killing over a million people every year.
In Everything Is Tuberculosis, John tells Henry’s story, woven through with the scientific and social histories of how tuberculosis has shaped our world—and how our choices will shape the future of tuberculosis.

This is a deliberately disturbing book, but the author’s unapologetic moralizing is never scolding, just firmly encouraging. As a comfortable American I have had no direct experience with TB, so I am grateful for this chance to learn about the all-time #1 killer disease that still wreaks so much death and destruction in poorer nations simply because the well-to-do nations haven’t bothered to eliminate this scourge that no longer affects them.
Book is much more interesting than the title suggests. Interesting history of TB and current status. Adds human interest by weaving in the personal story of someone having TB, near death, and survives. An easy read.
If you like John Green books, this is a great read. Different than his other books but written in his own style. This is a signed copy. Something to hold onto, for years to come.
I loved reading his books growing up but this blows my expectations out of the water!! I love his style of writing and his ability to tell a story while giving you historical facts interwoven between each major point makes it all the more enjoyable! This is a must read for anyone who studies modern pandemics/endemics!
This book is such a great read. There’s so much valuable information in this book, and I learned so much. Every John Green book is written so well.
