The Last of Us meets The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in this stand-alone dystopian romance about survival, sacrifice, and love that risks everything.
By encouraging massive accumulations of debt from its underclass, a single corporation, Caerus, controls all aspects of society.
Inesa lives with her brother in a half-sunken town where they scrape by running a taxidermy shop. Unbeknownst to Inesa, their cruel and indolent mother has accrued an enormous debt--enough to qualify one of her children for Caerus's livestreamed assassination spectacle: the Lamb's Gauntlet.
Melinoë is a Caerus assassin, trained to track and kill the sacrificial Lambs. The product of neural reconditioning and physiological alteration, she is a living weapon, known for her cold brutality and deadly beauty. She has never failed to assassinate one of her marks.
When Inesa learns that her mother has offered her as a sacrifice, at first she despairs--the Gauntlet is always a bloodbath for the impoverished debtors. But she's had years of practice surviving in the apocalyptic wastes, and with the help of her hunter brother she might stand a chance of staying alive.
For Melinoë, this is a game she can't afford to lose. Despite her reputation for mercilessness, she is haunted by painful flashbacks. After her last Gauntlet, where she broke down on livestream, she desperately needs redemption.
As Mel pursues Inesa across the wasteland, both girls begin to question everything: Inesa wonders if there's more to life than survival, while Mel wonders if she's capable of more than killing.
And both wonder if, against all odds, they might be falling in love.

I love this so much it’s metallic and super cute
I loved it. It kept me reading until my eyes blurred. It ended a little sadly but I'm hopeful. Book 2? Yes please.
This book IS GORGEOUS! The foil detailing is amazing on the dust cover and the physical cover itself! The sprayed edges are dazzling. I honestly purchased this book without realizing it was the special printed edition! I just wanted to read it as I LOVE Ava Reid. A fabulous surprise, indeed!
A little predictable, so I’m giving it 4 instead of 5. But even so, I’d still read the next part of this story if there ever was one
I should thank net galley for letting me have an e arc for this book!Something about the way Ava Reid writes feels very academic to me. Like you would read this book for a class. I would guess high school. And I don’t mean that to be insulting I actually enjoy it and do plan to read more of her books. I have read two so far so take the academic aspect with a grain of salt. This book is very much a love letter to YA dystopian novels. I got very strong hunger games vibes despite never having read the series, so it’s more I imagine there’s similarities. One’s and Melinoe were fantastic main characters and I loved their relationship. I did feel like the ending felt a little rushed but did kind of like how it ended (I won’t go into how it ended even though I really do want to!). I tend to avoid dystopian novels (they just aren’t normally what I reach for) but I really did enjoy this one.
