From National Book Award-winning author Elizabeth Acevedo comes the story of one Dominican American family told through the voices of its women
Flor has a gift: she can predict, to the day, when someone will die. So when she decides she wants a living wake--a party to bring her family and community together to celebrate the long life she's led--her sisters are surprised. Has Flor foreseen her own death, or someone else's? Does she have other motives? She refuses to tell her sisters, Matilde, Pastora, and Camila.
But Flor isn't the only person with secrets: her sisters are hiding things, too. And the next generation, cousins Ona and Yadi, face tumult of their own.
Spanning the three days prior to the wake, Family Lore traces the lives of each of the Marte women, weaving together past and present, Santo Domingo and New York City. Told with Elizabeth Acevedo's inimitable and incandescent voice, this is an indelible portrait of sisters and cousins, aunts and nieces--one family's journey through their history, helping them better navigate all that is to come.

i personally just did not like this at all. too many characters. way too boring. not my style at all.
It was as described.
Like a plant , or a casserole dish of many layers, we peel away each leaf of knowledge about this family of sisters, their past and their gifts. It is a cocoon of family—warm, yet engulfing. Almost smothering. Yet each has a personality of her own. At first it was hard to tell who was speaking but it gradually became apparent. The richness of their experience was revealing. Resilience and strength were modeled. I also liked the portrayal of the bond of sisterhood. It was also a challenge to test my limited Spanish.
Not my favorite read, book club only gave it a 3 also.
I read Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo This book was intriguing and such a deep read into a beautiful and complicated family! Acevedo is a master storyteller who writes about her culture, heritage and family connections! The story is about a family and the six women who are connected not only by blood but by love. It is an honest and caring tribute to the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴-the Island, the people and the folk laws. She writes with bits and pieces of Spanish as well as in a time space that is not linear but one can keep up! The descriptions of people, landscapes, existence, experiences, love, joy and pain are heartfelt! You know this author writes from a space of passion! This is a great get away read! Thank you Acevedo -my fellow #DC author for this prose!
