From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends comes the "equal parts intoxicating and dazzling" (Roshani Chokshi, New York Times bestselling author of The Gilded Wolves) first book in a captivating new duology following an ill-matched pair of spies posing as a married couple to investigate a series of brutal murders in 1930s Shanghai.

It's 1931 in Shanghai, and the stage is set for a new decade of intrigue.

Four years ago, Rosalind Lang was brought back from the brink of death, but the strange experiment that saved her also stopped her from sleeping and aging--and allows her to heal from any wound. In short, Rosalind cannot die. Now, desperate for redemption for her traitorous past, she uses her abilities as an assassin for her country.

Code name: Fortune.

But when the Japanese Imperial Army begins its invasion march, Rosalind's mission pivots. A series of murders is causing unrest in Shanghai, and the Japanese are under suspicion. Rosalind's new orders are to infiltrate foreign society and identify the culprits behind the terror plot before more of her people are killed.

To reduce suspicion, however, she must pose as the wife of another Nationalist spy, Orion Hong, and though Rosalind finds Orion's cavalier attitude and playboy demeanor infuriating, she is willing to work with him for the greater good. But Orion has an agenda of his own, and Rosalind has secrets that she wants to keep buried. As they both attempt to unravel the conspiracy, the two spies soon find that there are deeper and more horrifying layers to this mystery than they ever imagined.

oh that cliffy!!!

I definitely need to read the next book! While there was foreshadowing done to hint at the way the cliffy happened, I still gasped when I got to the last two words 😳👀 (I also gasped when other revelations were made at like 80% ish)Rosalind Lang (19) cannot bleed, cannot sleep, which means she’s somehow immortal and cannot die 👀. This makes her an ideal assassin 😬. Something was done to her, and she wants to know what 😅. Because of this, she wants to make up for her past actions, so she becomes an assassin working for the nationalist government under the codename Fortune (hence the title 🤣).Political tensions rise and a series of murders happen, so Rosalind’s assigned to go undercover with Orion Hong 👀 (22 ish). They have to pose as a married couple while investigating the case. As they keep working, their attraction grows 👀 and Rosalind especially starts to question a lot 😬.Things aren’t always what they seem 😅.What I liked/loved: possible spoilers—the tension between them 👀. Uffff. Talk about slow burn 👀 (no actual🔥 happens). Who’da thunk that kissing could be so sensual 🫠—how their connection deepens ❤️. Gah. Their banter and playfulness added depth to this, but when revelations were done and vulnerabilities shown, it was chef’s kiss 😮‍💨—the “I love you” scene 🫠🥹—Orion loving her laugh 🥹❤️—“Wife” 🫠—the twists, turns, and betrayals 😳. Not gonna lie, I felt sucker punched when things were coming to light 😬 this is why I need to read book 2 lol—the side characters 👀. I can tell a few have their own books 🤣—finding out more about these murders 👏—how protective they are of each other ❤️ for being a “fake” married couple, it sure doesn’t feel that way 🤣What I wanted more of:—more sweet moments 😅 but it’s okay cause I’m sure I’ll see them in the next book—no 🔥. I know. I know. But still 😭😭😭Overall, I enjoyed this

Captivating

Just like the previous duology set in this world, this book was too long. It was well over 500 pages, and I felt like the author could have cut out some of the filler. She could have cut 100 pages and still told the same story. I will say that once the story starts to unfold, it gets really good. I didn't see the twist coming until it was right there, and I was totally wrong about the character reveal.

freaking amazing

At first the first three chapters I was skeptical. But after that this book was amazing and exceeded my expectations. This book is out of my comfort zone and I can’t wait to read the other one. 10 out of 10
