Soon to be a major motion picture directed by Chloé Zhao and starring Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Emily Watson, and Joe Alwyn.
England, 1580: The Black Death creeps across the land, an ever-present threat, infecting the healthy, the sick, the old and the young alike. The end of days is near, but life always goes on.
A young Latin tutor--penniless and bullied by a violent father--falls in love with an extraordinary, eccentric young woman. Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family's land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is just taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

After a few chapters, once I stopped trying to fill in the blanks or think of "him" as William Shakespeare, and just read it as a story set in the 1500s about a family, I really began to enjoy the book. The novel explores love, sacrifice, and grief. The bond between Agnes and her husband, as well as between the children. You can truly feel the emotion coming through the pages, with a focus on Agnes.Grief is explored powerfully, showing how each character copes with loss in their own unique way.Overall, I found it a well paced read. If it weren't for the Goodreads reading challenge, I wouldn’t have picked it up but that’s exactly why I love those challenges. They push me to explore books I’d normally overlook.
Lovely story of family complexities. Grief is something hard to explain. People can be quite selfish in their ‘sharing’ of the experience. I think this author nailed it.
Good book overall would recommend
What a striking way to tell a story about William Shakespeare without once mentioning his name. He is son, brother, husband, father to a cast of characters you finally feel you know after they've been omitted from all you've been taught. Maggie O'Farrell has done an exceptional job bringing the history we think we know to life.
Enjoyed this read ! It doesn’t disappoint!!
