THE INSTANT USA TODAY BESTSELLER
Spencer Quinn's Heart of Barkness is the latest in the New York Times bestselling series that the Los Angeles Times called "nothing short of masterful"...
Chet the dog, "the most lovable narrator in all of crime fiction" (Boston Globe), and P.I. Bernie encounter heartache and much worse in the world of country music. They're both music lovers, so when Lotty Pilgrim, a country singer from long ago, turns up at a local bar, they drive out to catch her act. Bernie's surprised to see someone who was once so big performing in such a dive, and drops a C-note the Little Detective Agency can't afford to part with into the tip jar. The C-note is stolen right from under their noses - even from under Chet's, the nose that misses nothing - and before the night is over, it's stolen again.
Soon they're working the most puzzling case of their career, a case that takes them back in time in search of old border-town secrets, and into present-day danger because powerful people want those secrets to stay hidden. Chet and Bernie find themselves sucked into a real-life murder ballad where they have no one to trust but each other.

A nice little mystery. Not quite as good as others in the series, but a good read none the less.
This is Another entry in the Chet & Bernie saga, every bit as good as the others I’ve read. The series has held up well, but maybe 9 books are enough that it’s beginning to seem formulaic. It starts with the narrator, Chet the dog, being taken to the hospital for Bernie’s discharge. (He was injured in a previous adventure that I haven’t read). The story is from Chet’s “first canine” point of view and that works amazingly well, with scent playing a big role and occasional statements that he couldn’t follow the action completely because he’s a dog and can’t count past 2.Their client, a country singer, refuses to hire them, but they find someone else who does. The story is complex because it features murders that go back about 50 years. There’s an excellent resolution at the end, and a few well developed details. So, an excellent effort but one that leads the reader to wonder what’s left for the next book.
These two together are wonderful, but I love Chet. It’s so fun to imagine what my dogs are thinking throughout the day and in specific circumstances.. It’s because of these books and these wonderful stories about solving mysteries and the relationship between a human and a dog, that make me fall in love over and over again.
If you love dogs and mysteries you will love these books. Chet and Bernie books are so fun to read.
Bernie and Chet go to the rescue of Lotty Pilgrim, an aging country singer accused of murdering her cheating young lover. The emotions around the crime read like the lyrics of a country song. Bernie and Chet love music, and they don’t believe in Lotty’s guilt.Bernie digs deep into the past to find out the truth behind appearances. Chet who believes that Bernie is all-knowing is still surprised to learn that Bernie is an accomplished horseback rider. Good at digging up graves, too. Chet thought he was the expert digger. There are some fun digressions. Bernie meets an Internet influencer — and a newspaper owner who plans to replace reporters with AI. The world appears to be speeding by Bernie, but his dogged style of investigating still works very well.I’m galloping through this series. What a ride!
