The explosive finale to the Extraordinaries trilogy by New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune!
School's out for the summer and a raging, malevolent heat has blanketed Nova City. Dark, twisted, probably evil shadows have drenched the doorsteps of her good people's homes. And Nicholas Bell--fanboy, hero, ADHD-haver--is being super dramatic again.
But honestly, Nick's life is pretty much perfect. Yeah, it's hot out, but he finally gets to team up and train with his steamy superhero boyfriend to bring justice, protection, and disaster energy to the people of Nova City. It's everything he's ever dreamed of!
With graduation on the horizon and his future unknowable, Nick focuses on enjoying the present. Seth, Jazz, and Gibby are busy setting up headquarters for Lighthouse, their hero team. Nick's dad has partnered with former chief of police Rodney Caplan to start a new private investigation agency. And Nick's mother, the superhero known as TK, is right there at Nick's side. Where she's always been.
Hasn't she?
But something's off. It's not just Simon Burke running for mayor and campaigning to "cure" Extraordinaries. And it's not even the rumors that Nick's ex-boyfriend and villain-in-the-making Owen Burke has escaped.
Something else isn't right, and Nick will need all his friends and loved ones together to
uncover the truth before Nova City falls prey to the Burke family.
A truth that will reveal a traitor in their midst and burn through their lives like a wildfire.

TJ, yes! This series is both super entertaining and so important and courageous. I am a mom of a queer tween and teen. For them and me to be able to read and discuss these stories is priceless. Yes, thereโs sappy drama and impossibly clever banter but this piece of teen superhero fantasy fiction manages to weave in sex education, mental health, gender identity, and neurodivergence awareness, parenting, and social justice concepts and even demonstrates tactics. You might just become a better person if you read this, pay attention, and act on it.
This was a very satisfying 3rd and final installment. Things get more mysterious. The stakes just keep getting bigger. It feels like it might be too much. But the Lighthouse & Team Pyro Storm is always stronger together. Itโs always good when the gays win!
I donโt like giving low ratings, because writing is hard and anybody who manages to stick to it and finish a whole book - let alone three - deserves praise. My problem here is that there are too many plot holes, too many inconsistencies. It feels like the editor didnโt read the manuscript carefully enough so as to point out issues that could have been easily fixed.I also have a bit of a problem with fiction that tries to teach the reader rather than just tell a story, even when I happen to agree with the message.Having said that, itโs an accurate and layered representation of the mind of an ADHD person. I often see myself in Nick and the way his mind works and his difficulty controlling his impulses.
Not sure I loved this one as much as the other two, I think I could have done with more of the story POST reveal halfway through the book.
This is why I love TJ Klune books, you can finish them so quickly. Out of all three Extraordinaries stories, Heat Wave was my favorite by far. Heat Wave had the tightest story, the best character arcs for a majority of the characters, and the twist was utterly satisfying. The overall theme about not hiding behind your truth really hits hard. TJ Klune took that theme and ran with it and what helped was the final chapter really encompassed that theme. Heat Wave also has one of the sweetest Epilogues. After I finished reading I thought to myself I want another series following these characters in the Later. Bravo TJ Klune you have done it once again!
