Helen Zhang hasn't seen Grant Shepard once in the thirteen years since the tragic accident that bound their lives together forever.
Now a bestselling author, Helen pours everything into her career. She's even scored a coveted spot in the writers' room of the TV adaptation of her popular young adult novels, and if she can hide her imposter syndrome and overcome her writer's block, surely the rest of her life will fall into place too. LA is the fresh start she needs. After all, no one knows her there. Except...
Grant has done everything in his power to move on from the past, including building a life across the country. And while the panic attacks have never quite gone away, he's well liked around town as a screenwriter. He knows he shouldn't have taken the job on Helen's show, but it will open doors to developing his own projects that he just can't pass up.
Grant's exactly as Helen remembers him--charming, funny, popular, and lovable in ways that she's never been. And Helen's exactly as Grant remembers too--brilliant, beautiful, closed off. But working together is messy, and electrifying, and Helen's parents, who have never forgiven Grant, have no idea he's in the picture at all.
When secrets come to light, they must reckon with the fact that theirs was never meant to be any kind of love story. And yet... the key to making peace with their past--and themselves--might just lie in holding on to each other in the present.

I’m giving it the full four stars because the second half of the book is great. In the first however, Helen is INSUFFERABLE. And she knows she is, which is somehow worse because she does nothing about it, until of course she starts falling in love and is magically an endearing and great character. Still, Grant is kind of insanely well written, his lines are swoony (and trust that I do not say that lightly) and he’s just a TRUE yearner.I like. Overall, very enjoyable. Has a lot of things going on but does them pretty well. I had a soft spot for Helen trying to figure out her relationship with her parents, and I appreciated that it was so self aware in how first gens can nuke themselves in the name of cultural identity.
This might be one of my very favorite romance books I’ve ever read. If you love Abby Jimenez like I do, you might love this one. She has beautiful writing, and I love when the male lead is vulnerable/flawed while still being a heartthrob. I cried my eyes out and really deeply felt the emotions evoked by her writing, and also laughed at some of the sidekicks’ moments. Will definitely read this book again in the future, and really hope Yulin Kuang writes more.

Amazing book! It captured me right away. Love the style of writing and it really kept me reading as much as I could. Bought it for a trip and just about finished the entire book on the plane! I was interested and captivated all the way through and couldn’t wait to see what was around the corner with every page.
The premise on this one is a little bit weird. When Helen and Grant are seniors in high school, Helen’s younger sister Michelle commits suicide. By jumping in front of a random car. That happens to be driven by Grant. Even though it wasn’t his fault, Grant lives with the guilt. And even though Helen blames herself for not being a better sister, she also thinks of Grant as her sister’s killer. Thirteen years have gone by. Helen is a successful author whose YA series is being made into a tv show. Grant is a screenwriter who is struggling to find work. He doesn’t want to work on Helen’s show, but he does want to continue having a career and a roof over his head. So he takes the job. This one was tricky b/c Helen isn’t terribly likeable. She just not a very sympathetic character. I get that she’s had trauma but still. Grant has trauma too and he’s still an incredibly nice guy. They start off on bad terms but eventually learn to like each other. And more. This one was steamy. There is a looooottttttt of foreplay. So if you’re in to that, it’s pretty good on that level. But overall, I thought this one was just fine.
The relationship between Helen and Grant leans more to physical attraction versus a "I can't live without you love." I enjoyed the inside look into screenwriting and the found family vibes. Helen's relationship with her parents is almost non-existent. I would have liked to see more of an attempt to fix that relationship before her wedding to Grant. There were some emotional moments in this story that i felt needed a little more attention.
