"France, 1531. Orphaned by the age of five, Marguerite de la Rocque was heir to a chateau with its own village and lands. But her guardian, Jean Francois de la Rocque de Roberval, sells Marguerite's property to embark on an expedition to New France, bringing Marguerite and her maidservant with him. Aboard the ship, the women are limited to the company of the captain, the navigator, Roberval, and his secretary--a man whose musical talent, literary knowledge, and dark eyes intrigue Marguerite. It isn't long before the two of them are meeting secretly to declare their love for one another. When Roberval discovers this transgression, he is furious, seeing their affection as betrayal. As punishment, he maroons them on a small island off the coast, condemning them to certain death"--

easy and enjoyable read

When I started 5he book, I had no idea what to expect. As it unfolded I became intrigued and could not put the book down. 4 stars; story was great but there are a few unbelievable events - the polar bears, etc.

A Compelling Read

Total enjoyment is in store for you who read this wonderful story. The highs the lows cause one to read on with expectations that are more than satisfied. A story of unimagined survival amid the harshest of human cruelty.

Thoroughly captivating

I can’t remember the last time I was so absorbed in a book that I didn’t want to put it down and couldn’t wait to get back to it. The heroine’s adventure, and her strength and ability to learn and overcome, were extreme yet believable. The author’s style of writing in this book felt perfect for the era.

An instant classic

A tale that could have been written a century ago, but is fresh for today’s readers. A classic adventure, rare in that the adventurer is female. (Move over, Ayla.)
