Introduction by Joyce Carol Oates - Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read

Initially published under the pseudonym Currer Bell in 1847, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyreerupted onto the English literary scene, immediately winning the devotion of many of the world's most renowned writers, including William Makepeace Thackeray, who declared it a work "of great genius." Widely regarded as a revolutionary novel, Brontë's masterpiece introduced the world to a radical new type of heroine, one whose defiant virtue and moral courage departed sharply from the more acquiescent and malleable female characters of the day. Passionate, dramatic, and surprisingly modern, Jane Eyre endures as one of the world's most beloved novels.

I am going back and read this again. It is so what we need today. When I read again I will have a pen and paper there were so many words I read for the first time here.

Enduring Classic

Beautiful picture of the most enduring, passionate love stories, ever told, with complex characters and struggles- I read this at least twice per year. Bronte novels are a bit like Jane Austen but with more complex characters - love stories in which passion is palpable

Hard to put down

I loved this book, I enjoyed the complexity of the characters, the wonderful descriptions of scenery and the portrayal of human suffering. Wonderful story that immerses you in Victorian Era plights of women

What a surprise!

I am 83 and forever put off reading Jane Eyre--until now. And it was worth the wait! Published in 1847, it makes a perfect companion volume to Dickens' 1849 David Copperfield.

To read Jane Eyre is to know Jane Eyre

This is a book to savor. To have seen the movies is not enough. In the book you meet someone who has lived a hard life and still enjoys what God has given to her. The classics so often include God in their feelings and decisions about life, and this one is no exception. The vocabulary is incredible. I had to look up many words that have an archaic meaning. Charlotte Brontë must have been very educated. That being said, it did not detract from the flow of the story. There were many times that I wondered what I would have done in her circumstances. To read this book is to live her story with her. I’m sorry the tale is finished.
