*SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE COMING SEPTEMBER 12, 2025*

In this #1 national bestseller, master storyteller Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, tells the tale of the contestants of a grueling walking competition where there can only be one winner--the one that survives.

In a dystopian near-future, America has fallen on hard times. Sixteen-year-old Ray Garraty is about to compete in the annual grueling match of stamina and wits known as the Long Walk. One hundred boys must keep a steady pace of four miles per hour day and night, without ever stopping. The winner gets "The Prize"--anything he wants for the rest of his life. But the rules of the Long Walk are harsh and the stakes could not be higher. There is no finish line--the winner is the last man standing. Contestants cannot receive any outside aid whatsoever. Slow down under the speed limit and you're given a warning. Three warnings and you're out of the game--forever.

Well this was a sleeper

Some books entertain, others unsettle, but The Long Walk struck a nerve with me. On the surface, it’s a dystopian story about endurance and survival, but beneath that it felt like an extended metaphor for life itself, a meditation on hardship, resilience, and the quiet strength of simply moving forward. What captivated me most was how the novel strips away everything but the act of enduring. Pain, doubt, and exhaustion are constants, yet the characters press on, step after step. That rhythm felt deeply familiar. In life, hardship is unavoidable, and this book reminded me that meaning often isn’t found in some grand resolution but in the stubborn decision to keep going. The relationships between characters, the fleeting moments of connection, and the presence of outside voices along the way mirror the struggles we all face: the push and pull of self-doubt, the influence of others, and the search for purpose in the middle of difficulty. What makes the novel remarkable is its simplicity. King managed to stretch a single, brutal premise, a walk that only ends in death, into a story that holds you for nearly 400 pages. There are no twists, no elaborate plot devices, just the slow unraveling of people under impossible strain. It shouldn’t work, but it does, and it lingers long after the last page.

One of King’s best!

The Long Walk is one of Stephen King’s most haunting and unforgettable novels. From the very first page, it pulls you into a strange but eerily believable world where 100 boys are chosen to compete in a walking contest with only one rule — keep walking, or face the consequences.King’s storytelling here is stripped down but razor-sharp. He doesn’t waste time on unnecessary exposition; instead, you learn about the rules, the stakes, and the characters in a way that feels organic, almost like you’re walking alongside them. The slow burn of tension is masterful — each mile takes you deeper into the boys’ thoughts, fears, and friendships, making you both dread and anticipate what’s coming. What really sets this book apart is the psychological depth. It’s not just a story about endurance, but about human nature when pushed to its limits. There’s a strange intimacy that develops between the characters, and King captures it perfectly. You feel the exhaustion, the blisters, the hunger, and most of all, the will to keep going even when everything in you says to stop. The pacing is flawless — quiet moments of camaraderie are interrupted by sudden bursts of brutality that remind you how high the stakes are. The ending is ambiguous yet deeply satisfying, lingering in your mind long after you’ve finished. If you’re new to Stephen King, this is a fantastic place to start. If you’re already a fan, you’ll appreciate the mix of horror, suspense, and raw human drama that only King can deliver. It’s a chilling, thought-provoking read that proves sometimes the scariest monsters are not supernatural….they’re the rules we choose to live

Pass the time

What a captivating idea. The small conversations throughout the book were thought provoking and heartbreaking. The ending typical of Stephen King. I recommend for a quick read.

Next time I will skip it

It's an early "Stephen King" abit gross, but nothing really thrilling like some of his books. I think its a fast read, 3 days and i was done. Next up, "Never Flinch." Which after reading the back description, sounds alot like "The Long Walk."
