Love comes home for the challah-days in this sparkling romance.
Snow is falling, holiday lights are twinkling, and Abby Cohen is pissed. For one thing, her most annoying customer, Seth, has been coming into her café every morning with his sunshiny attitude, determined to break down her carefully constructed emotional walls. And, as the only Jew on the tourism board of her Vermont town, Abby's been charged with planning their fledgling Hanukkah festival. Unfortunately, the local vendors don't understand that the story of Hanukkah cannot be told with light-up plastic figures from the Nativity scene, even if the Three Wise Men wear yarmulkes.
Desperate for support, Abby puts out a call for help online and discovers she was wrong about being the only Jew within a hundred miles. There's one other: Seth.
As it turns out, Seth's parents have been badgering him to bring a Nice Jewish Girlfriend home to New York City for Hanukkah, and if Abby can survive his incessant, irritatingly handsome smiles, he'll introduce her to all the vendors she needs to make the festival a success. But over latkes, doughnuts, and winter adventures in Manhattan, Abby begins to realize that her fake boyfriend and his family might just be igniting a flame in her own guarded heart.

"Love You a Latke" by Amanda Elliot. This romance is the most traditional romance of all of these. It has the whole grumpy versus sunshine person, fake dating with a little forced proximity thing going on. The story focuses on Abby Cohen, coffee shop owner who needs her business to pick up or she is in danger of losing it, and Seth, the only other Jewish person in their Vermont town. To help keep the doors open, Abby agrees to head up the Hanukkah Community Festival the town has decided to host in order to increase tourism. To do that she needed a way to go to New York to cultivate some contacts to bring the Festival Lights to their Vermont community. Seth agrees to help Abby with that as he has a pressing need of his own. He needs a girlfriend- fake or otherwise- to keep his Jewish mom off his back. So, Seth makes Abby an offer she can't refuse. A free trip to New York and the offer of helping her make all the contacts she needs to make the festival a success in exchange for pretending to be his fake girlfriend. Abby agrees and off she goes with Seth to New York for Hanukkah. Over the eight days of the celebration, both Abby and Seth get way more than they bargained for. Honestly, at first, I was not a big fan of Abby, though I loved Seth right out of the gates. As the story evolved, Abby grew on me. There were some aspects of the story that I am not sure I totally understood, but overall I enjoyed the book. It was low on spice but high on snark. Abby never met a hateful comment she did not like. I gave it four stars.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶️#bookrecs #bookstagram #bookinstagtam #spicybooks #sweetbooks #mysearcy #hanukkah #festivaloflights #traditions #hanukkahbooks #susangooch #susangoochtheauthor #thecarringtonaffairs
This book was PAINFUL to read. I REALLY did not like this book.My main issues are with plot development and the writing style. I HATED both. All the attempts at being “quirky” just felt utterly forced and cringe. There were so many ways to shorten this book because so much of it felt like the author was trying to fill a word quota. HOW many times do you need to say “I’m fine. Yep, totally fine” (this is exactly the writing style btw)The ending to the “big event” was SO rushed, the author just made it an EPILOGUE…. Not even part of the main story. In addition, the the off page conversation with the main character’s parents… just added to the lazy plot development and pacing of the book.I was also really NOT a fan of the main character. I understand being grumpy, but she was also just nasty in the beginning. No amount of trauma excuses that.I really don’t think I will read another book by this author again. One thing this book CONSTANTLY did was compare Chanukkah to Christmas (while simultaneously saying that the main character HATES comparing Chanukah to Christmas 🫠). As a Jew who LOVES a cheesy Chanukah romance, I am REALLY turned off by that. This author is just not for me. Pass.
Very heavy material for a holiday romcom. From m abuse to Hitler, it comes across way more serious than advertised. The main character was difficult to like. Much bitterness.
A fun and enjoyable quick read for anyone - Jewish or not. As Jew with Vermont and New York connections I really enjoyed it.
Fun great quick read.
