"Quick, cutting wit . . . a keen ear."--The New York Times Book Review

Hollywood's newest wunderkind is Peter Alan Nelsen, the brilliant, erratic director known as the King of Adventure.

His films make billions, but his manners make enemies. What the boy king wants, he gets, and what Nelsen wants is for Elvis to comb the country for the wife and infant child the film-school flunkout dumped en route to becoming the third-biggest filmmaker in America. It's the kind of case Cole can handle in his sleep--until it turns out to be a nightmare. For when Cole finds Nelsen's ex-wife in a small Connecticut town, she's nothing like he expects. She has some unwanted--and very nasty--mob connections, which means Elvis could be opening an East Coast branch of his P.I. office...at the bottom of the Hudson River.

"Elvis [Cole] is the greatest . . . [ he is] perhaps the best detective to come along since Travis McGee."--San Diego Tribune

"[Crais is] far better at the private-eye-novel racket than most writers."--Newsweek

Getting better and better

If you have read other reviews of mine of Mr. Crais's books, you will know that I read his latest three books first (loved them) and then started with the Elvis Cole series at the beginning. I have not found the first two up to the standards the author now sets for himself, but I liked this book quite a lot. The wise cracking is eased off and Elvis gets himself involved in a situation that takes some doing to solve and it is done in a fairly believeable way. I hope that as the series progresses he continues to improve to the level of L.A. Requiem. In this book Elvis has been hired by a big shot Hollywood producer to find his ex-wife and son as he thinks after 12 years it is time to be a Dad. Well, Mom and son have moved from LA to Chelam, Connecticutt. Mom has made a life for herself and son, Toby, without any help from the big shot and it is not wanted now. However, Mom has this little problem of having been co-opted by the Mafia to do some money laundering (she is a branch bank manager) and while she would like to end the relationship, the Mafioso that has used her has other ideas.Soon all of the characters are in the same vicinity and it takes all of Elvis's and Joe Pike's efforts to keep matters from dissolving into a large pool of blood. How they do it is the point of these easy reading novels and why we keep coming back for more.

Classic Elvis Cole

Obviously older published book. Still very good story. Not current villains but still a good read. Joe Pike is such a mystery and a great offset to Elvis.

A bit uneven but worth a read

I found a lot to like early in the book – fun humor, quirky characters, and an interesting plotline, but this is a story involving gangsters, after all, so there’s quite a bit of graphic violence that I found disturbing. But there was some nice character development, and although intense suspense doesn’t really kick in until close to the end, it’s worth waiting for. I don’t know yet if I’ll become a regular reader of this series, but I’ll certainly try another book.

A page turner. Unexpected storyline twists and turns. Fabulous reading. Finally something unique and distinctive. One of the best reads available.
