There is a game that the immortals play.Β
There is only one rule: Don't lose.
Viola Marek is a struggling real estate agent, and a vampire. But her biggest problem currently is that the house she needs to sell is haunted. The ghost haunting the mansion has been murdered, and until he can solve the mystery of how he died, he refuses to move on.
Fox D'Mora is a medium, and though he is also most-definitely a shameless fraud, he isn't entirely without his uses--seeing as he's actually the godson of Death.
When Viola seeks out Fox to help her with the ghost infestation, he becomes inextricably involved in a quest that neither he nor Vi expects (or wants). But with the help of an unruly poltergeist, a demonic personal trainer, a sharp-voiced angel, a love-stricken reaper, and a few mindfulness-practicing creatures, Vi and Fox soon discover the difference between a mysterious lost love and an annoying dead body isn't nearly as distinct as they thought.

I found the writing style fun and unique, while occasionally hard to follow. I definitely had to re-read a few parts. The story itself was good- a little bit of of mystery, romance, and humor in a paranormal world.
I read another book by this author and enjoyed it, so I thought I would give this one a try. It had a lot of characters and timelines going, and I listened to this on audiobook, so I felt like I didn't give it all of my attention and I wasn't always sure what was going on. That's probably on me. But overall, I did like it! I didn't quite understand the game but I feel like things turned out how they should have and that's what matters to me. This was an interesting cast of characters. I didn't like the way the narrator read some of the characters because I couldn't always tell them apart when they were in a big group and I had to keep adjusting the volume.
Three stars because I really liked the end. I felt frustrated through out the book trying to keep the characters and the storyline straight.
The art on the cover and on the inside of the book is so gorgeous. The book is also very cute and fun to read, a very unique standalone story in the young adult fantasy genre. I love how much diversity is in this book. Currently sharing the book with friends who were longing to borrow it at a glance!
It took me a bit longer than Iβd like to admit to get settled into this world. Thereβs a lot of back and forth and jumping around BUT I thoroughly enjoyed it.
