An eerie, hypnotic debut about friendship, desire, and memory set against the sultry backdrop of Florida's swamplands.
"A mesmerizing, hallucinatory adrenaline rush of a novel."--Claire Luchette, author ofΒ Agatha of Little Neon
LONGLISTED FOR THE CENTER FOR FICTION FIRST NOVEL PRIZE
It's been years since Ingrid has heard from her childhood best friend, Mayra, a fearless rebel who fled their hometown of Hialeah, a Cuban neighborhood just west of Miami, for college in the Northeast. But when Mayra calls out of the blue to invite Ingrid to a weekend getaway at a house in the Everglades, she impulsively accepts.
From the moment Ingrid sets out, danger looms: The directions are difficult, she's out of reach of cell service, and as she drives deeper into the Everglades, the wet maw of the swamp threatens to swallow her whole. But once Ingrid arrives, Mayra is, in many ways, just as she remembers--with her sharp tongue and effortless, seductive beauty, still thumbing her nose at the world.
Before they can fully settle into the familiar intimacy of each other's company, their reunion is spoiled by the reemergence of past disagreements and the unexpected presence of Mayra's new boyfriend, Benji. The trio spend their hours eating lavish meals and exploring the labyrinthine house, which holds as much mystery as the swamp itself. Indoors and on the grounds, time itself seems to expand, and Ingrid begins to lose a sense of the outside world, and herself.
Against this disquieting setting, where lizards dart in and out of porches and alligators peek from dark waters, Gonzalez weaves a surreal, unforgettable story about the dizzying power of early friendship and the lengths we'll go to earn love and acceptance--even at the risk of losing ourselves entirely.

I read this in one sitting. Iβve read several books where an βold friendβ invites a person (or people) on a getaway, vacation, or to a party which the old friend kind of hopes for a reconciliation, a chance to clear the air and move on, or for some sweet revenge. It hasnβt really worked out. To those who are tempted when you get an opportunity like that, just say no!!! LOL!! Iβll keep reading though β¦ because itβs a fairly crazy ride π
'Mayra' was an intricate gothic literary horror novel. I loved the prose and the slow burn of encroaching dread. The house becomes its own character within the novel. Themes of friendship, memory, and identity are explored. 4.5 stars.
This book had me feeling unsettled by the atmosphere alone. Told through Ingridβs perspective, we follow her trip to a remote swamp house to reconnect with her childhood friend, Mayra. The house itself feels dilapidated and suffocating, and her time there with Mayra and Mayraβs boyfriend is filled with awkward, tense interactions. As Ingrid reflects on the carefree, risk-taking Mayra she once admired, she realizes the woman in front of her doesnβt quite match the friend she remembers. Is something wrong with Mayraβor is her new relationship to blame? Adding to the unease, Ingrid discovers a journal from another woman who once lived in the house, linking her own experiences to something more disturbing.By the end, I felt the book carried a strong message about friendships growing apart and learning to move forward. While it wasnβt outright scary and took me a while to get through, it nailed that eerie stillness that gothic novels thrive on. If you liked Iβm Thinking of Ending Things, this might be right up your alley.4βοΈThank you to netgalley and Random House Publishing Group for the gifted copy of this book.
This is one of those books where the atmosphere and characters take center stage over a fast-moving plotβand I really enjoyed that. The writing creates a deep, menacing vibe that lingers, the kind that makes you want to keep reading even when the story takes its time. The flashbacks were a real highlight for me. They gave so much nuance to Ingrid and Mayra, adding layers to their choices and relationships. Even though the overall pacing isnβt quick, those moments made me eager to keep turning the pages, because I wanted to understand them better. The characters are real and flawed, likeable but also stubborn and frustrating at times. That balance made them feel like people I might actually know, which is rare and special. It makes for the kind of storytelling that sticks with me long after I finish, and itβs why I can see myself returning to this book again in the future. Thanks to the publisher for providing me with a free ARC.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and longed for more the moment it ended. It's a beautifully written, haunting story about the complexities of childhood friendships growing into adulthood, with a constant undertone of uncertainty and dread.
