Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop

Your most delightful holiday read: the sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller The Christmas Bookshop, from beloved Scottish author Jenny Colgan.
Christmas comes early--far too early--to McCredie's little Old Town bookshop in Edinburgh. It's summer, but an American production company has decided that McCredie's is the perfect location to film a very cheesy Christmas movie. After all, who can resist the charmingly narrow historic street with its Victorian grey stone buildings and warmly lit shop windows?
Carmen Hogan, the bookshop's manager, is amused and a bit horrified by the goings-on, but the money the studio is paying is too good to pass up. She uses the little windfall from filming to create new displays and fend off a buyout offer from an obnoxious millionaire who wants to turn McCredie's into a souvenir shop selling kilts made in China and plastic Nessies. Still reeling slightly from a breakup, Carmen's not particularly looking forward to the holidays. But just as snow begins to fall and the lights of Christmas blink on, all sorts of lovely new possibilities present themselves...for McCredie's bookstore, and for Carmen herself.
- A touching holiday read Perfect for fans of uplifting winter romances
- A delightful Christmas gift

I couldn’t wait to hear what happened between Carmen and Oke. Makes me want to visit an old Scottish bookstore!
In this charming novel, Carmen, a free-spirited bookworm who finds herself at a crossroads in life. Initially, Carmen's aimless approach to her career is in her stark contrast to her successful sister, Sofia, which I'll admit left me feeling frustrated. However, as the story unfolds, we witness a beautiful transformation that had me rooting for her by the end. When Carmen loses her job and moves back home, she's presented with an unexpected opportunity: helping her sister with childcare and assisting Mr. McCredie, the owner of a failing bookshop. This setup provides the perfect backdrop for Carmen's growth and the novel's exploration of family dynamics, personal ambition, and the magic of literature. The author skillfully weaves together multiple storylines, from Carmen's efforts to save the bookshop to her evolving relationships with her nieces and nephews. The depiction of the bookshop's transformation is particularly enchanting, with Carmen's creative ideas breathing new life into the struggling business - not to mention the STACKS. The addition of a children's storytime and the clever use of an old train set add whimsical touches that make the shop come alive in the reader's imagination. While there is a hint of a cozy romance, the heart of this story lies in Carmen's personal growth and the bonds she forms with those around her. The author does an excellent job of showing how extending kindness and love can not only impact others but also lead to one's own personal development. The vivid descriptions of the local area, from the fairy-tale-like quality of Sofia's house to the wintry beauty of the town, create a cozy atmosphere that perfectly complements the warmth of the story. The anticipation of a famous author's visit adds an extra layer of excitement to the narrative.Although Carmen's character initially drove me to frustration with her seeming lack of direction, watching her development throughout the story was satisfying. The author doesn't shy away from showing the sometimes painful process of growth, making Carmen's journey all the more relatable and rewarding. In conclusion, this novel is a delightful read that reminds us of the transformative power of books, the importance of family bonds, and the beauty of second chances. It's a perfect choice for anyone who enjoys heartwarming stories of personal growth set against a backdrop of literary charm, and overall, it is a fun read that is worth your time.
If you haven’t read the first book in this series, you’ll be a little lost at first, but this is a great sequel to Carmen’s story. Just a charming book about a bunch of people you want to root for (even some of the ones you wouldn’t expect to). And Rudi is a trip - he cracked me up!
