Franny Stone has always been the kind of woman who is able to love but unable to stay. Leaving behind everything but her research gear, she arrives in Greenland with a singular purpose: to follow the last Arctic terns in the world on what might be their final migration to Antarctica. Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, traveling ever further from shore and safety. But as Franny's history begins to unspool--a passionate love affair, an absent family, a devastating crime--it becomes clear that she is chasing more than just the birds. When Franny's dark secrets catch up with her, how much is she willing to risk for one more chance at redemption?
Epic and intimate, heartbreaking and galvanizing, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is an ode to a disappearing world and a breathtaking page-turner about the possibility of hope against all odds.

I really liked her Wild Dark Shore, its characters, its story. I am less excited about Migrations. It is a sad, dystopian tale that takes place in the Age of Mass Extinction where nearly all the animals have gone extinct. The last wolf is locked away in an extinction sanctuary. The sea turtles, big cats, rhinos, everything is long gone. Science tries to save what's left of the bees and bats and butterflies because they are pollinators and humans will go hungry without plants. Also, while I liked the characters in Wild Dark Shore, I could not say the same about the characters in Migrations, especially Franny. More could have been said about the boat crew (they are fishing illegally because most of the fish have disappeared ). The migration voyage itself is rather far-fetched. Still, it is a warning--a cautionary tale of where selfish humanity might be heading. The book is "written with sadness and regret "(for the animals that have been wiped out) "and for love for those that remain."
This is my favorite author. Her books are each very different but full of literary wizardry. The character development is subtle with a gentle unveiling of each persons soul. There are no red herrings or tricks but a simple telling of an amazing story full of humanity and emotions. I can hardly wait for the next book
I found this a really interesting read. Strong woman character but realistically flawed.
Loved the book
I didn’t give 5 stars because because of the difficulty keeping up with changes of time frame. I wish it had been writing with fewer.
