I originally purchased this book for my 13 yo who has fallen in love with Agatha Christie. It’s sparked my interest so I picked it up and I am so glad I did. This is set in the aftermath of WWII in England and follows a detective with a knack for getting himself into binds. The mysteries definitely take many twists and turns and nothing ends up where you think it will. I believe this is based on a true story and a true person, which makes it even more interesting. I would 100% recommend this book.
Murder at Holly House is a wonderfully atmospheric and engaging mystery that perfectly blends festive charm with a touch of darkness. Denzil Meyrick delivers a classic whodunit feel, filled with sharp dialogue, well-drawn characters, and plenty of twists to keep readers guessing. The pacing is steady, and the setting—snow-covered and brimming with tension—adds a cozy yet suspenseful layer to the story. While a few moments felt slightly predictable, the writing and character development more than make up for it.Overall, it’s an enjoyable, smartly written mystery that’s perfect for fans of traditional crime stories with a seasonal flair.Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC. All opinions are my own.
A fun cozy/crime filled read that's not necessarily Christmasy. Denzil brings us to Holly House where a stranger has been found dead in the chimney. Inspector Frank Grasby, our narrator, is called to the small town and is on the case with his American intern, Deedee. There is plenty of laugh out loud humor in this and the setting in the 50's adds a nice touch to the story. There is also darker elements afoot as the story progresses and we see the town isn't quite what Frank expects. All in all, a great and enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.
This is book 1 in the Frank Grasby series. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next book. This series is set in the in the early 1950's in England after WWII but the war plays a part in the story. Inspector Grasby is sent to Elderby, a remote village in England as punishment for letting horses escape a noble's field. A body in a chimney is the least of his problems when he arrives. Frank is a good officer but seems to be unlucky and his father isn't much of a help.
Fascinating, amusing and surprising. Great Characters. Deffinately not your run off the mill detective story. A joy to lovers of North Yorkshire.True to the era.(early 50s)
