Spencer Quinn's Of Mutts and Men is the latest in the New York Times and USA Today bestselling series that the Los Angeles Times called "nothing short of masterful"...
When Chet the dog, "the most lovable narrator in all of crime fiction" (Boston Globe), and his partner, PI Bernie Little of the desert-based Little Detective Agency, arrive to a meeting with hydrologist Wendell Nero, they are in for a shocking sight--Wendell has come to a violent and mysterious end. What did the hydrologist want to see them about? Is his death a random robbery, or something more? Chet and Bernie, working for nothing more than an eight-pack of Slim Jims, are on the case.
Bernie might be the only one who thinks the police have arrested the wrong man, including the perp's own defense attorney. Chet and Bernie begin to look into Wendell's work, a search that leads to a struggling winemaker who has received an offer he can't refuse. Meanwhile, Chet is smelling water where there is no water, and soon Chet and Bernie are in danger like never before.

Spencer Quinn definitely knows dogs. The stories are fairly complex and engage the reader. Chet, the dog, narrates like your normal canine. Having lived with dogs I can picture Chet in the story which makes for entertaining realism. Oh yeah, and Bernie, the detective, is okay too. Highly recommend this series - especially if you appreciate canines.
Love reading these. Ligjt and entertaining.
Bernie is obsessed with the regionβs endangered water supply. Chet has never been clear about what or where the aquifer is. But the plot in this book revolves around it. People are going to be killed because of it. And Bernie and Chet will have some very close calls because of it.Bernieβs love life, never better than iffy, doesnβt improve in these pages. And once again, we watch Bernie drive away from money. There are some fun characters, as usual β a very smart and heroic little Mexican girl, a young nitwit who canβt stop stealing stuff, and a couple of stone-cold killers. The plot is punctuated with explosions, to add to the fun.As Chet says, βWhat a life!β
This may be book #10 in the series but it's only the 3rd one I've read and it's the first where any deaths happen on-screen' At least one of those was 'peaceful', though I started bawling when I knew what was happening. The actual murders happened off-screen, thank goodness and the only 'violent' death that happened on-screen was richly deserved. There were so many places where I almost burst out laughing at Chet's narration, other places where I actually got really nervous and a little scared for them both (even when you know it's a series, you worry) and other places where I cried. This was a real roller-coaster of a book. Kinda wish they'd turn them into a television series or movies. I'd pay to go see 'em as long as Chet kept narrating.
I really enjoyed this story. As usual, the best parts were when Chet (the dog) was thinking. This was a funny story. Will definitely look for more of these books.
