A Good Morning America Book Club Pick! - A bighearted novel with technicolor characters, plenty of Texas swagger, and a powder keg of a plot in which marriages struggle, rivalries flare, and secrets explode, all with a clever wink toward classical mythology.
For fans of Madeline Miller's Circe: "The Iliad meets Friday Night Lights in this muscular, captivating debut" (Oprah Daily).
The Briscoe family is once again the talk of their small town when March returns to East Texas two years after he was caught having an affair with his brother's wife. His mother, June, hardly welcomes him back with open arms. Her husband's own past affairs have made her tired of being the long-suffering spouse. Is it, perhaps, time for a change? Within days of March's arrival, someone is dead, marriages are upended, and even the strongest of alliances are shattered. In the end, the ties that hold them together might be exactly what drag them all down.
An expansive tour de force, Olympus, Texas cleverly weaves elements of classical mythology into a thoroughly modern family saga, rich in drama and psychological complexity. After all, at some point, don't we all wonder: What good is this destructive force we call love?

Took a while for the action to start. I wasn't a fan of Vera or Peter. I wish there was more focus on Thea.
In "Olympus, Texas," Stacey Swann delivers a compelling family saga that intricately explores themes of loyalty, love, and betrayal. The Briscoe family becomes the center of attention when March returns to East Texas after a scandalous affair, disrupting the already fragile dynamics within the home. June, his mother, is weary from past heartbreaks, setting the stage for a tense narrative filled with emotional complexity as she wrestles with her own choices and the return of her son.Swann's skillful writing weaves in elements of classical mythology, enriching the story as the characters' lives echo those of ancient figures, reflecting on the timeless struggles of human relationships. As secrets surface and devastating events unfold, the novel captures the essence of familial bonds that can both uplift and destroy. "Olympus, Texas" is a powerful exploration of how love can be a double-edged sword, making it an engaging read for those who appreciate intricate character studies and modern retellings of age-old themes.
I thought this book would be interesting but absolutely non of the characters were at all likeable so I didn’t care what happened to them. The writing was very distracting at times as the author was constantly inserting awkward phrases into sentences. I was constantly having to re-read. Editing could have been better. Some weird story lines as well. Making your brother sit vigil with the dead boyfriend you just killed? Bizarre.
The characters were well developed and I felt a connection with most of them. There were twists and turns that I didn't expect and that was so surprising. I highly recommend this book if you're into family sagas!
A leading, small town family had its troubles. Respected, yet watched , for scandals. Wives, mistresses, siblings.......all converge for a town spectacle. Editing was not the best, but story was ok. Hope for this family of assorted misfits.
