THE FANTASY BOOKTOK SENSATION!

For fans of Uprooted and For the Wolf comes a dark, lushly gothic fantasy about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom--but the monster in her head isn't the only threat lurking.

Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her.

Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom she calls home--she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.

But nothing comes for free, especially magic.

When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure the kingdom of the dark magic infecting it. Except the highwayman just so happens to be the King's own nephew, Captain of the Destriers...and guilty of high treason.

He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cards--the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

Wow!

Page turner indeed. For a book not really talked about this was amazing. It ends without my happy ending and hanging onto wanting to know what happens next.

my jaw is on the floor

As I am writing this review, I have tears in my eyes. I have literally just finished reading this book- and will be immediately reading the next. Rachel Gillig has written a book with amazing world building, complex magic systems and history, complex relationships, and everything I’ve ever needed from a fantasy and romance. The ending has torn a bit of my heart out, and seeing as I need to read part two immediately, I’ll end my review here. If you are thinking about reading this…you won’t regret it.

Such Fun Rhymes

I know… I know.. I should not be comparing this book to The Knight and The Moth but man I can not help it. Rachel Gillis is incredible at her craft. Everything is so beautifully written and do not get me wrong, I really enjoyed this story. The providence cards and their abilities and curses are fascinating. The blight on the world and the story to cleanse it just felt a bit fast paced in where we started. The connection with the FMC and MMC didn’t feel very sincere, but I am someone who loves build up and yearn. Everything that happened with them felt like a weak time-line. I’m not sure if I’m a fan of the “trees” expression, just a little cringy I suppose. I can appreciate that Rachel writes the books so that these stories are not happening because people aren’t expressing their feelings or having to spend 50% of the book chasing around the love of their life. It’s a fully fleshed out well rounded book.

One Dark Window

I went into this book not knowing if it was really something I would enjoy reading. I finished the book feeling like it was the best book of the year. I can't help hoping for the outcome I want but this book had so many surprises that I'm not sure where it will take me. Can't wait to start the next one!

A refreshingly unique and gripping fantasy.

I’d give 4.5 stars if I could. One Dark Window truly surprised me with its originality. The storyline felt fresh and different from anything I’ve read in a while—and it was so well executed. I really connected with the characters and found myself constantly thinking about the plot, eager to get back to reading. A strong start to the series that left me wanting more.
