Includes a brand new bonus story of how Mallow Island came to be!
The New York Times Bestseller
From the acclaimed author of Garden Spells comes an enchanting tale of lost souls, lonely strangers, secrets that shape us, and how the right flock can guide you home.
Down a narrow alley in the small coastal town of Mallow Island, South Carolina, lies a stunning cobblestone building comprised of five apartments. It's called The Dellawisp and it is named after the tiny turquoise birds who, alongside its human tenants, inhabit an air of magical secrecy.
When Zoey Hennessey comes to claim her deceased mother's apartment at The Dellawisp, she meets her quirky, enigmatic neighbors including a girl on the run, a grieving chef whose comfort food does not comfort him, two estranged middle-aged sisters, and three ghosts. Each with their own story. Each with their own longings. Each whose ending isn't yet written.
When one of her new neighbors dies under odd circumstances the night Zoey arrives, she is thrust into the mystery of The Dellawisp, which involves missing pages from a legendary writer whose work might be hidden there. She soon discovers that many unfinished stories permeate the place, and the people around her are in as much need of healing from wrongs of the past as she is. To find their way they have to learn how to trust each other, confront their deepest fears, and let go of what haunts them.
Delightful and atmospheric,Β Other Birds is filled with magical realism and moments of pure love that won't let you go. Sarah Addison Allen shows us that between the real and the imaginary, there are stories that take flight in the most extraordinary ways.

I have this author in automatic purchase, that is how much I love her stories. I like some stories more than others but I love all of them. This one took a little to get me to stick to it but once I did I finished it in one day. As in all her stories at the end there is so much interwoven between the all characters and their past that you donβt get it all until the last page and that is so wonderful! Everyoneβs story is different and interesting and important and meaningful as only this author does it without taking away from the perceived main character.Againβ¦ I did read it right when it came out just re-read it again now this week after my yearly reading of The girl who chased the moon.. The Garden Spells and The peach keeper! This books always make me want to tell people about them, make me wish I belong to a book club where I can talk about them with others, they leave me wanting for more of her stories and if that is not a compliment to an author I donβt know what it is.The only book I love more than these is Pride and Prejudice so just go figure how much I like this author! Please keep writing!
No sex, no violence, but still it works. How does she get away with it?
Book ordered βnewβ but arrived with scratches on the cover and the ends damaged a bit. Iβm not about to waste carbon emissions on a replacement but I donβt appreciate the condition being marked as βnewβ if theyβre used, even in good condition.I love the actual story, thatβs why I bought it in a hardcover so itβs rather sad that it doesnβt look great when it got here.
The book starts as a slow introduction of a few people that live in condos made from an antique stables, on a semi tropical island off the east coast. Each character lives by themselves, and have their own convoluted story; we gradually learn about them, and how they intersect. There is a mostly gentle fantasy component to this story, that helps us to learn more about their needs and motivation, and their past. The characters are fleshed out and you feel like you really know them, and root for them. Its a little world you want to visit, to plunk yourself down in, and join the little birds there.
This is a gentle breeze from a sweet South Carolina retreat. We all have ghosts. This little treasure of a book helped me see my ghosts more kindly.
