Welcome to the island of Asunción, home to the most powerful witches--and Pacheco, their biggest fan. In this beautifully illustrated graphic novel, debut creator Juan E. Zambrano will take readers on an epic adventure that's all about magic, identity, and staying true to yourself.

Pacheco's biggest dream is to practice magic! There's just one problem: commoners, and especially boys, aren't allowed to learn witchcraft.

However, once his family's fishing business begins to suffer, Pacheco is determined; he's certain that learning magic is the best way to help his family and community. He meets Doris, a grumpy, old witch, and he decides to become her apprentice.

As Pacheco enters the world of magic, he finds himself caught up in the rules and schemes of a whole new society and surrounded by magical creatures in need of protection. Pacheco will have to dig deep to muster the courage--and magic--to defend his future.

Debut creator Juan E. Zambrano presents a breathtaking graphic novel that delves into the importance of staying true to oneself while courageously addressing challenging themes such as gender roles and environmental protection. Perfect for fans of Joe Latham's Haru, Emma Steinkellner's The Okay Witch, Claribel Ortega's Witchlings, and Hayao Miyazaki's films like Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away.

A Fun magical read for the kids

I really liked this book and so did the kids. It follows Pacheco, a young boy from a small fishing village, who wants to learn magic even though it’s traditionally reserved for girls. The artwork is really vibrant and engaging, making it super appealing for kids and even adults. The story is packed with adventure, humor, and a strong message about being true to yourself which I like. It's pretty easy it is to follow and has straightforward language and fun illustrations. I really love how it dives into themes of friendship, courage, and self-discovery while also featuring magical creatures and a bit of humor. I think it's great for kids aged 9 to 11 and my younger ones really enjoyed it. They had plenty of questions and loved talking about the characters. I really like that it's a clean fun story that encourages kids to follow their dreams.

fantastic story

What a fantastic and heartwarming story! This book follows a brave young adventurer who dares to choose his own path different from his family's expectations ,and follows his dreams with determination until he finds success. It’s such an empowering message for young readers, showing that it's okay to be different and that staying true to yourself can lead to amazing things. The illustrations are absolutely stunning bright, colorful, and full of life! They don’t just complement the story; they enhance it. I found myself pausing on pages just to take in the artwork. It actually helped me connect even more with the story and understand the character's journey on a deeper level. What I really love is that while the book is clearly geared toward kids, it carries real emotional weight. It’s meaningful and layered, with themes of courage, individuality, and perseverance. It’s the kind of book that sparks conversation and leaves a lasting impression. A truly beautiful read, visually and emotionally. Highly recommended!

Loved the art and story

I read this to my almost 5 year old at bedtime over the course of a few days, and she loved it! She had no trouble following along once I explained how speech bubbles work and pointed to who was talking. She enjoyed the story and art alike. It's a self contained story that wraps up neatly while leaving the door open for sequels. The South American names and references were a special layer on top of the story.

A fun read for most ages

Pacheco is a precocious boy growing up in a small village. He lives with his father and grandfather, trying to make a living from the sea as fishermen. But Pacheco doesn't want to be a fisherman. He wants to learn magic.Juan E Zambrano brings us Pacheco's story in the form of this graphic novel: Pacheco and the Witch of the Mountain. The art style is very child-friendly, not too much detail to distract young readers. But unlike many such art styles it is also clean and very appealing to teenagers and adults. The concept is a common one, kid wants to break away from his boring family life and become something special. In this case, a witch. There is adventure, action, and a fair dose of humor throughout. I look forward to more by Zambrano!
