I thought I picked up a book about the shipping industry but ended up reading a compelling history of the American 20th century weaving industry, land use, social movement, transportation, global poktics... All through the lens of the cost paid by those with the least power. Highly recommend.
This is an narrative masterpiece, obviously a labor of love and deep thought. It is also an odd book in that it presents an absolutely devastating critique of the world capital system while never stating the obvious conclusion: this is a failed system.I wonder if the author will end up on the Abundance Network with Ezra Klein? Hopefully not. This really is an important book. Well done!
I learned a lot about Oakland, the impacts of globalization, and the power dynamics that impact all of us. This book weaves wonderful stories of key individuals with large scale analysis. Easy read and well-researched.
Wonderfully written and meticulously researched. Made me think and feel so much about things I thought I knew, but didn't really. Most enjoyable for those familiar with the areas he mentions, but the overall ideas are important and relevant to all. Also recommend the audio book as he reads it himself.
