A New York Times Book of the Year - Nebula Award nominee - Featuring an introduction by Gloria Steinem
From the pioneering New York Times bestselling science fiction author of Kindred.
The radically speculative odyssey of a young Black woman in a post-apocalyptic America and the community she cultivates despite the horrors of climate change and social inequality
The time is 2025. The place is California, where small, walled communities must protect themselves from hordes of desperate scavengers and roaming bands of people addicted to a drug that activates an orgasmic desire to burn, rape, and murder.
When one small community is overrun, Lauren Olamina, an 18-year-old Black woman with the hereditary train of "hyperempathy"--which causes her to feel others' pain as her own--sets off on foot along the dangerous coastal highways, moving north into the unknown.

This novel has been on my must-read list for years and I’m so glad I’ve finally found time to read it carefully, to absorb the themes and messages. Octavia Butler’s prescient warning of climate, economic and social changes give the reader so much to contemplate, especially for anyone living in USA today. Highly recommend.
Great book, received a "new book" with lots of damage to the cover. The forward is written by Levar Burton, the afterward is written by NK Jemisin
We read this book for book club so I wasn’t expecting to appreciate it as much as I did. I had heard wonderful things about it but it is hopeful. Interesting that it is set in 2025 when it was published in 1993. And lo and behold we are experiencing some of the problems that Are in this book. She was quite the prophet.
This is a rich look at society at its very worst. I stumbled upon it and can't say enough about the power of Ms. Butler's story and characters. Immediately ordered Parable of the Talents when done. Read the afterward.
if we don’t act now. Butler does an amazing job portraying what our future could be like. The writing and the message are phenomenal. One of the most interesting books I have ever read.
