A New York Times bestseller!
Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, this young adult fantasy follows the forbidden romance between a powerful prince and an ordinary girl as they try to survive their kingdom's grueling laws pitting them against each other.
She is the very thing he's spent his whole life hunting.
He is the very thing she's spent her whole life pretending to be.
Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya--the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that--ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime--making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.
Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be keenly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can to stay alive and out of trouble...easier said than done.
When Paedyn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya's princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites' powers--the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don't kill her, the prince she's fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is...completely Ordinary.

This was a good read, though at times it reminded me of elements from other stories I have read. I like the differing points of view, as well as both Paedyn and the Kai. I wasn’t happy with our female lead and a couple decisions she made, and honestly without the male lead she wouldn’t have lasted the book. I will read the next book as I am curious to see how the story will continue.
Love the start of this Trilogy! It kept me hooked! This was my first book by this author and it definitely won't be the last! I loved the start of this Trilogy! Can't wait to get my hands on the next book. Both narrators were new to me but they nailed it. They brought the characters to life so perfectly! I will definitely be looking for more books by them and counting down the days till book 2, Reckless from Lauren Roberts!
You know those books that wrap you up so tight it’s like an addiction pulling you in during every waking second of your day?! But you’re a mom so every “waking” second you can actually read happens to be one am; which is fine because it means you can finish the book. But not fine because you feel a little lost, a lot determined to knock out the second in a little time as possible, utterly exhausted yet still unable to turn your brain off? Yeah…. This book is that and more!
I think I'm in love.Good story, good pace. God, the YEARNING in this book is so good!! Definitely one of my top 2 book BF lol can't wait to read the next one!
This was very YA. it reminded me of the hunger games in some ways but it had its own twist to it. I loved the characters.
