I saw this book as a suggestion on tik tok and bought it. I also read the customer reviews, and everyone said it was disturbing and graphic. I guess my idea of graphic is different. It was a good book, just not that graphic. I love Karen Slaughter so I knew it would be a good read. If those of you like reading graphic books, read The Final Truth about Pee Wee Gaskins. It is in his own words, but fair warning I read this book a year ago and still cannot get the images out of my head, because they are TRUTH.
So many emotions. Such a good book. I highly recommend this book. The chapters are very long, but it’s still very easy to follow if you pick up and put down a lot.
I had seen Pretty Girls on a few must read thriller lists I look at from time to time. While some of the content is a bit disturbing, it is absolutely imperative for the story to work to have all the unpleasant details laid out. There were so many twists I didn't want to put it down for the fear of missing some incredibly important "holy crap!" moments! This was an excellent revenge story, but more importantly a story of overcoming the rifts caused by trauma and allowing forgiveness. I have already recommended this one to a few of the people in my book club that have stronger stomachs.
I will warn you, the torture and murder descriptions are brutal. Possibly the worst I have read. However, they got to me, as I’m sure they were meant to. The story was gripping, the mystery, twists and turns were shocking, but also made sense. And I cried at the end. I couldn’t have asked for more from this book.
First, I’m glad I didn’t read the synopsis on the book before reading this because I think it gives too much away. I had no idea that Julia, Claire, and Lydia were sisters - and it made for a great surprise.Second, there are some truly appalling, disgusting things in this novel, but that’s true with a lot of thrillers, so you’ve been warned.Third, even though Karin Slaughter gets a few things wrong about guns and bullets (most likely stuff she read on the internet), she’s woven an excellent story here and is a very good writer. I’m definitely going to read more of her books.
