How do you find yourself after you lose the one you loved the most?
NATIONAL BESTSELLER - Grieving the loss of her best friend, a young woman's life is turned upside down when she meets a grumpy stranger who swears he can help her live again, in this heartwarming, slow-burn romance by the author of Ready or Not.
A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: NPR, Elle, Library Journal, New York Public Library, Seattle Times
Lenny's a bit of a mess at the moment. Ever since cancer stole away her best friend, she has been completely lost. She's avoiding her concerned parents, the apartment she shared with her best friend, and the ever-laminated "live again" list of things she's promised to do to survive her grief. But maybe if she acts like she has it all together, no one will notice she's falling apart.
The only gigs she can handle right now are temporary babysitting jobs, and she just landed a great one, helping overworked, single mom Reese and her precocious daughter, Ainsley. The only catch: Ainsley's uncle, Miles, always seems to be around, and is kind of. . . a walking version of the grumpy cat meme. Worse - he seems to be able to see right through her.
Surprisingly, Miles knows a lot about grief and he offers Lenny a proposition. He'll help her complete everything on her "live again" list if she'll help him connect with Ainsley and overcome his complicated relationship with Reese. Lenny doubts anything can fill the void her best friend has left behind, but between late night ferry rides, midnight ramen, and a well-placed shoulder whenever she needs it, Miles just won't stop showing up for her. Turns out, sometimes your life has to end to find your new beginning.

But to make it sweet and simple, this book deserved my first written review on goodreads. No bad things to say, I absolutely loved Lenny & Miles, Ainsley & Reese, the new found friends, her support system, the funny moments.. everything about this book was so lovely and so real.Thank you Cara for this 5 star read(:
Sooo good so far! Came in great
Cara Bastone did it again! While this one did not hook me as quickly as Ready or Not, it did have the same emotional depth. It was sad, fun, and heartbreaking in the best way – make sure you are in the right mindset for all the grief! My first impressions of Miles were not great, but he eventually grew on me. Lenny is so quirky and once you realize the depth of her grief, I think you start to understand her much better. Miles is so patient, and sweet in a lowkey way, it really snuck up on me how much I ended up loving him! I loved Ainsley, she added some much needed humor around such heavy subjects, and all of the side characters were really great. I felt like this story was really beautiful and it went through many stages, and while the romance was not prevalent throughout, it had the perfect ending!
Lenny is imperfectly perfect and Miles is perfectly imperfect in the latest emotional rollercoaster from Ms Bastone. Since reading her first book, I have been an automatic one-click for her works.I want a Miles! I NEED a Miles! Everyone needs a Miles! With Lenny drowning in grief (her best friend since kindergarten died), Miles helps her get her life (and self) back. Lenny helps Miles connect with his niece and half sister. Lenny’s funny, quirky personality meshes beautifully with Miles’s quieter, more serious vibes. These two help each other so much. Also, a HUGE thank you to the narrator, Alan Finke, who became Lenny! Her techniques and voice are perfect! I HAVE to find more of Alex…the world needs more of this extremely talented voice actress.Perfect!
Do you know that feeling when you're reading a book, enjoying it, and them bam--all the feelings and it becomes a whole different reading experience? That was me and PROMISE ME SUNSHINE. I think about it every so often. The representation of grief? The slow-burn romance? The idea that someone can really save someone else, in all the ways that matter? The setting and friendships? All SO so well done.Lenny is spiraling after her best friend's death. Lou was a sister in all but blood and Lenny is doing anything she can to escape feeling that kind of grief. She's even avoiding the apartment she and Lou shared. When she takes a short-term nannying job and meets Reese and her daughter, Ainsley, and Reese's half-brother, Miles, she stumbles into their unorthodox family and a friendship with Miles.Wow, Miles. There's a quote about 3/4 through Promise Me Sunshine. Lenny is talking to her mom about her burgeoning feelings for Miles and says "that man walked into hell and dragged me back out." And I LOVED Miles for that. For seeing Lenny and holding space for her grief. For being a true friend when that's what she needed.Cara Bastone is the kind of author who writes warm stories that are so easy to get lost in. I'm so thankful I read this book because it ended up being really moving and sweet. The romance was such a slow burn that it felt totally genuine and I loved watching Lenny fall in love with life again.
