This was a really fun adventure! The pacing was quick and engaging. I’m not typically a multi-partner romance fan, but I really enjoyed the dynamic between Siobhan, Nix, and Bastian. I actually would’ve been happy with even more romance between the three of them, especially at the end where things just kind of ended abruptly. I enjoyed the way Katee Robert mixed in elements of fantasy and magic throughout! All in all an enjoyable and fast read!
I mostly consumed this book via the audiobook on Spotify during my shift so I got through it a lot quicker than I would have if I had gone through the Kindle version.–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––This novel follows Nox (they/them) right after the events of Blood on the Tide by the same author. Nox is asked by the leader of the rebellion, known as Siobhan, to help her pull her lover, Bastian, out of a Cwn Annwn ship. However, this goes against the deal they have in place that says Nox will help Siobhan with the rebellion as long as Siobhan doesn't mention Bastian to Nox in any way, shape, or form. What they don't realize is that helping Bastian escape the Cwn Annwn ship puts them all in mortal danger.–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––It's been a while since I read the first two books in this trilogy so I'm a little rusty on the details. I don't remember very much of Nox's personality or their character from the first two books. However, I do like them as a person so that made it easier to listen along to the audiobook.I couldn't stand the femme narrators at all but I can't put my finger on why that is. I think it's because their voices are deeper than I prefer. I'm guessing that's pretty much it but it really put me off for most of the book. This book was going to be a 5-star read if it wasn't for my dislike of the narrators. I hate it when a narrator pulls me out of my "reading" experience. I don't know why I'm griping so much but here we are.I thought the book ended on a very hopeful note and I think that's why this book got a rounded-up 3 stars instead of the 2 stars I was going to give it. I hate that I rated this book so low after rating the other two more highly but, again, here we are.I don't want to give anything away, spoilers-wise, but I thought the idea behind the Cwn Annwn that is explained not just in this book but in the entire trilogy is a good one. I don't know how faithful it is to the source material but it's still one that left me hanging on every word. Literally.I'd recommend reading this book via the Kindle version of the book or a physical copy. That's just me, though. I think I'll be reading my next book physically rather than through an audiobook but we'll see. Fingers crossed for a higher rating, right?
A gift of a book, looking behind the curtain of leadership, sacrifices leaders make, and why the good ones work so hard to make life better for everyone.
Thank you to Berkley Romance for the free book and to PRH Audio for the complimentary audiobook. These opinions are my own. This is the third and final book in the Crimson Sails series. This series is definitely one to read in order. Through the first two books, we have met many of the people fighting as part of the rebellion against the Cŵn Annwn. In this book, we get to know the even more important players and read the conclusion to the overarching drama.I had appreciated reading about Nox in the earlier stories. They absolutely deserved their own book. And it felt that they matched incredibly well with Siobhan and Bastion. I would have loved seeing even more of their backstories, especially between Siobhan and Bastion. With three leads, the emphasis felt especially focused on Nox. The steamy scenes were well done. And the emotional storylines dug deep.As makes sense with concluding the trilogy, the book felt more focused on the fantasy than the romance. I especially loved the quote, "We've been saving people since the beginning, and now it's time to save, well, everything." The stakes are so high, and I was so invested in whether the realm would be saved from an authoritarian force that intentionally created divides among its people.Nathaniel Priestley, Zura Johnson, and Nicky Endres narrated the three POV, each with uniquely recognizable voices that helped orient me to the perspective. The book sped by at just over 10 hours.
This is an exciting conclusion to the Crimson Sails trilogy. While each book features a different couple, there are plenty of ongoing plot threads that come to fruition in this final installment. I wouldn’t recommend reading them out of order, there’s a lot you’ll miss! The elemental magic-wielding captain NBiMC must rescue their former lover, the noble MMC, who is now the current boyfriend of the rebel leader and shifter FMC. There's a lot of emotional complexity between the three, all set against the backdrop of a magical rebellion aboard pirate ships. So much happens in this book, swashbuckling rebels, high-stakes magic, and romantic tension galore. I could not put this book down and read it cover to cover (metaphorically of course, I read on a kindle).I was thrilled to see more of the couples from the first two books and how their stories wove together. This finale is epic, action-packed, full of magic, and deeply satisfying.I’m sad to see this series come to an end, but it’s definitely one I’ll reread. Who knows, mayhaps some of these characters will show up in another realm someday.Spice: 4/5Plot: 5/5Writing: 5/5My Enjoyment: 5/5
