IN AMERICA, DEMONS WEAR WHITE HOODS.
In 1915, The Birth of a Nation cast a spell across America, swelling the Klan's ranks and drinking deep from the darkest thoughts of white folk. All across the nation they ride, spreading fear and violence among the vulnerable. They plan to bring Hell to Earth. But even Ku Kluxes can die.
Standing in their way is Maryse Boudreaux and her fellow resistance fighters, a foul-mouthed sharpshooter and a Harlem Hellfighter. Armed with blade, bullet, and bomb, they hunt their hunters and send the Klan's demons straight to Hell. But something awful's brewing in Macon, and the war on Hell is about to heat up.
Can Maryse stop the Klan before it ends the world?

Loved this book, a nice insight to how to use your pain for good in a sense to use it for something meaningful instead of vengeance. 5/5 no complaints .
An action packed horror fantasy with elements of history and lore. This was a recommendations for people obsessed with the movie ‘Sinners’. They were completely right!! Clark gave us haints, a burning juke joint, and music that transcends the veil. I’m really interested to know if Coogler read this during his research. Phenomenal read, the descriptive gore def activated my trypophobia.I only had one gripe about the book and that was one specific repetition. If I hear the word Ku Klux one more time it will be too soon.
I enjoyed the lore I encountered in this book. I don’t know much about haints or Gullah magic but it pulled me right in, I wanted to read more. Maryse’s pain is palpable and relatable. The issues raised about being stuck on outside differences, not realizing we all have the same enemy. It’s hate that divides us and a willful misunderstanding. I loved Chef and Maryse’s “About damn time!” line (I don’t want to give it away.) Such a good read!
I read this novel for a horror book club. It is horrific because of its content - not necessarily that it will jump scare or terrify you, but in it's discussion of hate. The illustration and personification of hate will make your skin crawl AND your brain will light up upon recognizing how correct Clark's writing choices are. 10/10
The book was pretty good. I was looking for a new read and this was recommended as a “if you enjoyed Sinners read this.” It was a quick read but I liked the story. I wish it was longer though and there was more of a backstory but would read the follow-up if there was one.
