Actor-dancer Alyson Stoner's revelatory and incisive memoir--from family violence and betrayal, to eating disorders and religious trauma--may begin in Hollywood, but its chilling relatability will resonate with anyone navigating identity, privacy, purpose, and mental health in a digital age.

Raised on soundstages and studio lots from the age of six, shuffling between auditions for Disney Channel, Cheaper by the Dozen, or Missy Elliott music videos, Alyson Stoner experienced many of the defining moments of childhood inside the bizarre fishbowl of Hollywood. From working eighty hours a week at eight years old, to learning how to distinguish fan mail from kidnapping plots, to TV execs saying they weren't "anorexic enough" to stop working and get help, Alyson struggled to find stability and sanity in a chaotic world.

In Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything, Alyson shares their powerful story for the first time, detailing a turbulent home life fractured by substance abuse, harrowing accounts from rehab, the messy process of discovering their sexuality in church, rebuilding a life after an early professional peak, and charting a path of self-discovery and advocacy. With striking introspection, Alyson connects the dots across the entertainment industry ecosystem, child development, and media culture, exposing the "toddler to trainwreck pipeline" of child stars and sparking timely conversations about success and society's enchantment with fame.

Bold, entertaining, warm, and galvanizing all at once, Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything is more than a personal memoir: it's a beacon for industry reform, a road map for breaking the bonds of generational trauma, and a testament to the freedom and strength that come from finally trusting your own voice and power.

I Have Eaten My Fill and I Still Want More

It's been a long time since I've absolutely fallen into a book and you'd think there was some kind of shortage from the way I devoured Semi-Well-Adjusted in 2 days. Alyson's personal voice is clear and strong, their stories are meaningful and relatable and it's interesting to hear things from their side of the story. No longer the "little white girl from the Missy Elliott music videos" and no longer "Sally from Mike's Super Short Show" or any of the other characters they portrayed over the years, Alyson is an adult who has somehow managed to make it to the other side of literally everything. This memoir sheds light on the questionable and predatory practices of the child acting industry as well as the psychological effects of being in the spotlight during formative years. Alyson's story is poignant and heartbreaking at times but it is also compelling and important. I have eaten my fill and I still want more.

For anyone who values emotional growth 🧠

As a child, I longed to be on television. At 20 years old, a part of me still holds on to that dream with semi-seriousness. Child star horror stories are a dime a dozen. There is no end to the victim blame train that Hollywood puts out. Despite knowing the statistical likelihood of failure and abuse, it’s hard to give up on the dream, and hard to accept the statistics when the dream feels so attainable. Alyson’s story is the first that has actually truly and wholeheartedly convinced me that Hollywood is a beast to be slayed. It will take a long time to change the deeply engrained patterns of worship and victim blaming within the system, but the more people that share their story, and the more listeners that care, the faster we can enact change. Thank you Alyson, for using this medium to tell your story.I haven’t devoured a book like this in a long time. I cannot personally relate to many of the experiences that Alyson shares in their book but the mark of a great writer is to fully and completely immerse the reader in their perspective. Not once is this book tabloid. Not once is this book exploitative. Not once does the book fail to hit your heart and brain strings simultaneously. It is impossible to leave this book without a deep respect for Alyson’s journey.Disclaimer: I did not buy this book from Amazon. I bought it from my local bookstore with my meager paycheck. So I am not an official Amazon reviewee. But I digress. Please support local bookstores!!! Ok I truly digress.

Courageous vulnerability and resilience that captivates and inspires

Alyson Stoner’s Semi Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything is a thought-provoking deep dive into child stardom that refuses easy answers. They tackle the pressures of fame with honesty, and the book provocatively unpacks eating disorders, perfectionism, and religion without flinching. It blends personal memoir with sharp cultural critique, inviting readers to question what success, worth, and belonging really feel like in a world that idolizes young bodies and flawless images. While at times intensely intimate, the work remains accessible and brave, offering both vulnerability and fuel for conversations about resilience and identity. Overall, it’s a compelling, challenging read that stays with you long after the last page.

More Than a Lead—A Lighthouse

📘 Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything | @alysonstoner🚨 OUT TODAY 🚨One thing I’ve learned about Alyson Stoner: their concern for others runs deep. The pressure they carried as a child (whether forced or self-imposed) was far too much for one person, let alone a kid.I’m grateful not just for their stories, but for the advocacy, the resources, and the courage to speak the uncomfortable truths.Alyson, you’re beyond worthy of being a lead character. Maybe it’s just a different role than you expected ✨ and it’s changing lives ✨
