The Hunger Games meets vampires in this heart-wrenching, epic fantasy romance of dark magic, and bloodthirsty intrigue from bestselling author Carissa Broadbent.
For humans and vampires, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always - always - guard your heart.
The adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, Oraya carved her place in a world designed to kill her. Her only chance to become something more than prey is entering the Kejari: a legendary tournament held by the goddess of death herself.
But winning won't be easy amongst the most vicious warriors from all three vampire houses. To survive, Oraya is forced to make an alliance with a mysterious rival.
Everything about Raihn is dangerous. He is a ruthless vampire, an efficient killer, an enemy to her father's crown... and her greatest competition. Yet, what terrifies Oraya most of all is that she finds herself oddly drawn to him.
But there's no room for compassion in the Kejari. War brews, shattering everything that Oraya thought she knew about her home. And Raihn may understand her more than anyone - but their blossoming attraction could be her downfall, in a kingdom where nothing is more deadly than love.

I've had this on my TBR for the longest time and only picked it up for a buddy read. Honestly, now I'm just waiting for them to finish so we can scream together.I loved how bits and pieces of information were sprinkled in a refreshing way (at least for my eyes) to bring more information on our characters' stories. There's nothing new under the sun, so you can expect a few tidbits here and there. But it doesn't lessen the impact either way. There are twists and even more turns. There are times you'd be moving forward only to get splattered across the wall. But I adored the rich lore and history, the natural weave of the relationships, and the vicious mockery of worship. A telling of finding out who you are when you're caught between two places that try to define you as lesser than what you should be.A really strong book and I can't wait to pick up the next in the duet.
This book and it's sequel should have been a trilogy. The story breaks into a different direction in both books that would have made more sense as a separate middle book. In fact, I'll happily buy them again if the author breaks the story up this way in the next editions.Besides that though, the story is extremely well-written and beautifully imagined. Such a creative world—I'm a huge fan. (A little too heavy on the adult scenes for my taste, but I whited them out, and it doesn't affect the story at all.)
This was definitely a fun read. Dark dystopian type feeling vampire romantasy with trials and politics. Secrets and betrayals. The world and concept were strong, same with the ending and reveals. But I wasn’t in love with the book. The plot was interesting. I enjoyed learning about the different vampire factions, the characters, and their backstories. There was enough going on to keep me entertained and guessing. The romance had potential. The cave scene definitely felt intense. But I wanted more yearninggg, crazy heart beating out of my chest emotions that grew with every page and it didn’t really give me that. I think I liked the idea of them more than how their relationship actually played out.I’m going to give it 3.5⭐️. Rounding up to 4. I didn’t feel obsessed with it. I didn’t wake up needing to read it. But it was definitely a good time when I picked it up. I’ll finish the series at some point.
It's been a long time since a book made me feel love, joy, excitement, anguish, longing, and sadness. I cared about all the characters. At first, I was frustrated that I had stumbled on to another Trials trope. It started out fairly standard, but then it bloomed and grew and deepened and became a great story with a journey that only used the Trials as a backdrop.I loved that the author tied up the loose ends, and the book felt completed. I felt very satisfied. The ending of the book left me feeling that any continuation would be a true sequel rather than simply a Part Two. That being said, I look forward to reading the need book in this series.
This book was super fast paced and not really my cup of tea. The plot was good, but had alot going on and alot that wasn't addressed. I didn't really buy the chemistry/love story between the two main characters and they definitely were not "enemies" in the beginning despite most people labeling this as an "enemies to lovers". I wasn't really invested in any of the characters and won't be reading on. Sadly, I think this was overhyped online and was a bit of a let down for me.
