From the first content creator to interview President Biden, leading progressive voice Brian Tyler Cohen takes a step back from the day-to-day news cycle to explain how the American political landscape has turned into such a dumpster fire--and what Democrats need to do to get us out of it.
In Shameless, Brian Tyler Cohen lays bare the long con of the modern Republican Party. While the radical right continues hiding behind gaslighting maneuvers, artificial slogans, and hollow catchphrases, Cohen's unflinching political commentary illuminates the realities and dangers of the ever-widening gulf between the vaunted Republican brand and their actual behavior.
With a foreword by Congressman Jamie Raskin, drawing on interviews and insights from Pete Buttigieg, Mehdi Hasan, Jen Psaki, and other luminaries of the Left, Cohen reveals:
- How Republicans have leaned on their historical branding to give themselves a permission structure to behave antithetically to everything they say;
- Why the mainstream media has proved itself a willing participant in this ongoing farce-- particularly since the rise of toxic, sensationalist MAGA mania; and
- What lessons Democrats can glean from a clear-eyed view of the landscape we're operating in--and the steps we must take to rebalance our political landscape.
During this all-hands-on-deck moment in our his-tory, Shameless is essential reading for those seeking to understand our dire situation, and a rallying cry for those fighting to preserve constitutional democracy.

Although this review comes somewhat after the bookβs initial release, my recent pre-order of Brianβs forthcoming title, βThe Day After: How to Wield Power in a Post-Trump World β A Progressive Political Playbook on Saving Democracyβ, prompted me to share my thoughts on Shameless and to encourage others to read it.I have followed Brian Tyler Cohen on his YouTube channel since mid-2020, and he has become my primary source for thoughtful political commentary. His exceptional work has profoundly shaped my understanding of American politicsβparticularly noteworthy given that, for the first 61 years of my life, I paid virtually no attention to the subject. My only prior election vote was cast in the 1976 presidential election (Ford vs. Carter) a couple of months after I turned 18.As someone who entered the political arena with minimal background knowledgeβsparked primarily by Donald Trumpβs 2020 campaignβI found Shameless exceptionally illuminating. I have read it cover to cover twice, each time in just a few sittings, unable to set it aside. Brian offers a clear-eyed, unflinching examination of the U.S. Constitution, governmental institutions, electoral processes, and the operational realities of both major parties. He does not shy away from highlighting the significant gap between Republican rhetoric and actual practice, exposing what he sees as deep hypocrisy in the partyβs exercise of power.Particularly compelling is Brianβs analysis of the modern Republican Partyβs departure from its historical roots. He contrasts the partyβs founding principlesβembodied by Abraham Lincoln and centered on national unity and the preservation of the Unionβwith its contemporary embrace of an extremist, anti-compromise approach. By invoking the βParty of Lincolnβ label, Brian underscores a striking irony: a once-unifying force has, in his view, evolved into an entity that fosters governmental dysfunction and leans toward authoritarian tendencies.βShamelessβ not only deepened my understanding of these dynamics but also complicated my perspective on personal relationships, including my ongoing efforts to better comprehend my motherβs staunch Republican convictions.I am now eagerly anticipating βThe Day After β and look forward to having both books autographed when Brian next visits Phoenix. Readers seeking an insightful, candid exploration of contemporary U.S. politics from a progressive perspective will find βShamelessβ well worth their time.
okay
Engaging enough that I am having trouble starting it because my mother - a retired banker - made it to chapter 8 before I could rip it from her hands.The book is an indictment of safety theater and the author's powerful stance is meaningful and impactful.Best work on safety I've read in awhile - as a former process safety engineer, this is where the meat and potatoes of process safety engineering and EHS work lies - in the ability to think beyond the systems and checkboxes and look further into the endemic plague of workplace accidents.
This book is a very insightful but scary look at US politics today.I've watched Brian Tyler Cohen videos for a couple years and have learned so much about current politics, but this book has really shown me a lot of history I wasn't aware of. Maybe it's due to not following politics at all for the first 40ish years of my life, or living in a fairly red state, but much of the information from before about 2015 was a shock to me.I'm somehow more scared but also maybe more optimistic (and definitely more informed) after reading this. I strongly recommend this to anyone interested in the current state of the US.
When I am reading the online news there are places to comment and I just can't resist putting in my two bits and reading what others think.I think a large swath of America is as crazy as a crap house rat. We all have our opinion.BTC has a sharp wit. He is no Seth Meyers or Jimmy Kimmel, but there is inherent laughter as he reports on moment by moment happenings.But he has good ethics and principle that come through his sometimes biting assessment of a political leader or the situation they are involved with. A I love that he shares the spotlight with other brilliant commentators, lawyers and other pundits.I bought this a table book, because I support his work. But there is always Patreon too. I watch the majority of his several times daily reports on Youtube and now Bluesky.Buy this book or tune in, you will be up to speed on the happenings. Plenty of drama, but no unnecessary drama.
