USA TODAY AND PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BESTSELLER - "Wingate's stellar latest explores a centuries-long legacy of missing child cases. . . . Her portrayal of the region's history, culture, and landscape enthralls. Wingate is at the top of her game."--Publishers Weekly, starred review
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours comes "a sweeping tale about little known history" (People).
1990. Law enforcement ranger Valerie Boren-Odell arrives at Horsethief Trail National Park seeking a quiet place to raise her son. But no sooner has Valerie reported for duty than a teenage hiker goes missing and the long-hidden burial site of three children is discovered in a cave. Val's quest to uncover the truth wins an ally among the Choctaw Nation's Tribal Police but soon collides with the deadly legacy of the land itself.
1909. Eleven-year-old Olive Radley knows that her stepfather is a threat to the two Choctaw girls boarded in their home. When the older girl disappears, Ollie flees, taking six-year-old Nessa with her. Together they begin a perilous journey to the remote Winding Stair Mountains, the territory of outlaws, treasure hunters, and desperate men. Along the way, they form an unlikely band with other children struggling to get by on their own.
In this gripping novel, Lisa Wingate traces the story of children abandoned by the law and the battle to see justice done. Amid times of deep conflict over who owns the land and its riches, Ollie and Val each leave behind one life in search of another.

Told with a dual timeline of the early 1900’s and 1990, this book speaks with a sense of veracity and expertise that few historical fiction novels do. In the early part of the century, the story of Olivia Radley and her fight to survive and keep other children safe was nothing short of heroic. In the 1990’s her counterpart, Ranger Valerie Boren-Odell, is fighting her own battle against loneliness since she has just lost her soulmate and a fiercer battle against discrimination against women. I loved the atmosphere of the story, with a setting and tone that placed me right there. The characters were believable and evoked complete empathy with their situation. I enjoyed the dual timeline and especially looked forward to the chapters with the children because I was so interested in finding out how they would survive in such a hostile world. It was in Val’s story that the mystery was presented, of how and why so many children were forced to survive on their own and who the bones belonged to that Val investigated in a nearby cave in the park. This book is rich in authentic details that is well woven with fiction, so well in fact that at times it was difficult to tell the two apart. I enjoyed learning about the history of Oklahoma, especially the story of crusader Kate Barnard and her fight for the “elf children” who were cheated of their birthrights. Great story told in a fantastic way!I checked out a copy of this book from the local library using the Libby App. I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions expressed are my own.
