"Skin Love" is a heart-warming book about self-love and self-empowerment. Why do we have different skin colors?
A girl named Zola realizes that people have different skin colors. With her best friend she discovers the most beautiful thing:
Everywhere in nature you can see different colors. Each Butterfly has its own color, each dog, cat, bird (and the list goes on...) has an own, beautiful skin color. Zola and her best friend travel to different places where they see all the different colors in nature. They realize that different skin colors are not only very normal, but also the most wonderful, unique thing the world could have. We are all the same, yet beautifully different. Educational, mindly written book for children:
We consulted a lot of professional people to get this story right. We realized a few things: 1. Often authors make the mistake that they start off by telling a story about black children that are not content with their skin color. From an educational standpoint, it is actually not a good start for a book and even counter-productive. The children reading the book will automatically and subconsciously associate their skin color with a negative feeling because the child in the book does it. Even if children didn´t have problems with their skin color before, they would have them now. If you start your book by associating skin color with neutral or positive emotions, it will have a positive impact. 2. There are a lot of studies that show that it is crucial for children to read a lot of books. A study by Timothy Bates and Stuart Ritchie even shows that the amount of books a child reads determines how educated and successful a child will be in the future. We therefore encourage all the parents to read children´s book to their children and toddlers as much as they can. 3. A study conducted by the University of Toronto also shows that children learn social skills the best if the characters in the books are human, not anthropomorphic animals which many publishers still believe. Human characters make the story more relatable for children because they can actually see themselves in the situation. Therefore, we chose human characters!
Our mission - Baerenstark Verlag:
All our books strive to be inclusive and diverse. We want to normalize the appearance of different cultures and ethnicities in children´s books. 2. Educational
We want to encourage children to be the way they are. To ensure that we carefully choose what we put in a book and what not. The first 5 years of child development are such an important part in a child´s life, if not the most important part. To effectively help their development reading books is very crucial. Everything a child reads and learns in that phase has to be well thought through and educational. Therefore, we always consult multiple professionals. 3. Sustainable
We want the give the environment back what we can. Therefore, we plant a tree for every book that is being bought. If you want to have more information on that, visit our website or write us an email!
