Unbearably tense, utterly propulsive, and studded with folklore and horror, Something in the Walls is perfect for anyone who loves Midsommar and The Haunting of Hill House.
Newly-minted child psychologist Mina has little experience. In a field where the first people called are experts, she's been unable to get her feet wet. Instead, she aimlessly spends her days stuck in the stifling heat wave sweeping across Britain, and anxiously contemplating her upcoming marriage to careful, precise researcher Oscar. The only reprieve from her small, close world is attending the local bereavement group to mourn her brother's death from years ago. That is, until she meets journalist Sam Hunter at the grief group one day. And he has a proposition for her.
Alice Webber is a thirteen-year-old girl who claims she's being haunted by a witch. Living with her family in their crowded home in the remote village of Banathel, Alice's symptoms are increasingly disturbing, and money is tight. Taking this job will give Mina some experience; Sam will get the scoop of a lifetime; and Alice will get better, Mina is sure of it.
But instead of improving, Alice's behavior becomes increasingly inexplicable and intense. The town of Banathel has a deep history of superstition and witchcraft. They believe there is evil in the world. They believe there are ways of...dealing with it. And they don't expect outsiders to understand.
As Mina races to uncover the truth behind Alice's condition, the dark cracks of Banathel begin to show. Mina is desperate to understand how deep their sinister traditions go-and how her own past may be the biggest threat of all.

Mina has just graduated with her degree in child psychology and is waiting for her opportunity to change children's lives. It seems as if she has been waiting forever for "her real life" to begin. When she gets the opportunity to help Alice, a young girl that believes she is being haunted, she seizes the opportunity to help . Superstitions are deeply held in this small British village and as Mina struggles to help Alice, not everyone is happy. This book is good choice, full of mystery & suspense.
I thought the beginning was a little slow and maybe a little confusing. I had to reread it twice but then as it got going I very much enjoyed the book. I think it was scary and definitely creepy. I really liked that the ending tied it all up. I really enjoyed the character development and would recommend!
This book was entertaining and kept my attention...but I had a lot of issues with it. The main one was Mina who is studying child psychology, was brought along on a paranormal investigation to do a profile on a young girl who is supposedly haunted by a witch in order to prove/disprove the haunting. And somehow Mina only ever has like one REAL conversation with the girl and instead spends all of her time running around investigating things and getting mixed up in other peoples business like Nancy Drew.I did enjoy this one's small town setting and the creepy ritual, however I was left with a lot of questions and was annoyed with most of the decisions the main character makes. Would definitely watch a screen adaptation of this one though.
The writing is immersive, evocative, and cinematic. The book stands out. Great writing, but also good editing. Some scenes were slow, but the high-energy ones rushed off the page and crashed in my brain. British authors are adept at that.
The storyline was interesting and suspenseful, but I feel like the ending was missing a bit of something. I enjoyed it though.
