Joni Lark has a secret. She's one of the most coveted songwriters in LA, and yet she can't write. There's an emptiness inside her, and nothing seems to fill it.

When she returns to her hometown of Vienna Shores, North Carolina, she hopes that the sand, the surf, and the concerts at The Revelry, her family's music venue, will spark inspiration. But when Joni gets there, nothing is how she left it. Her best friend is hiding something, her mother's memories are fading fast, and The Revelry is closing.

How can Joni write when her world is leaving her behind?

Until she hears it. A melody in her head, lyric-less and half-formed, and an alluring and addictive voice to go with it--belonging, apparently, to a wry musician with an emptiness of his own.

Surely, he's a figment of Joni's overworked imagination.

Then a very real man shows up in Vienna Shores. He's arrogant and guarded--nothing like the sweet, funny voice in Joni's head--and he has a plan for breaking their inconvenient telepathic connection: finish the song haunting them both and hope they don't risk their hearts--or their secrets--in the process.

Because that melody, the one drawing them together . . . what if it's there for a reason?

The long goodbye

I love that, while overall light and funny love stories, Ashley always strikes a relatable chord of the human experience (pun absolutely intended).Sounds like love was such a fun concept and a beautiful tale about how terrifying it is to fall in love, to leave home, to miss out, to admit your dreams have changed, and to lose a loved one… whether suddenly or slowly.

Music, Sounds of Memories in Melodies…

When we feel music, really feel it electrify and thrum throughout our body and soul, we connect to emotional memories that are captured in reverberations like light on film. And Joni and Sebastian, Bird & Sasha, both children of musicians meet as if destined to have always to have to meet, destined to complete an unfinished melody, an inheritance.Make no mistake, this is a love song, a love song of music. Maybe no greater power exists than the strength of music to remain, even among those grappling with memory loss, music echoes, often the last tendril lost. So, when a famous song writer with a record-setting, overplayed hit song by a top performer meets the proverbial bad boy sensation at a career dip, meet in a concert stadium box where the kiss cam captures their proximity, a compulsory kiss becomes something more, something unexplained, that links them in a sort of telepathy that neither distance or time eradicates. To resolve the situation, they agree to address the inexplainable situation which they believe can be addressed by tackling the incomplete melody they share, remnants of a melody, a haunting melody, a melody rich in its potential, a melody that demands their collaboration. This is a love song, a love song of youth, family, friendship, loss, and celebration, of pain and joy. Each chapter is a song, a song with more depth and relevance, shown in situations and relationships extending through generations. Well worth a read. If this book is on audible format, it would be so effective with musical tunes. Wonderful read.

Best Ashley Poston Book!!!

“In that moment, I realized that music could be everything. It was the feeling of existing, dancing, reveling in the pouring rain. It was magic.”I haven’t read a 5 star book yet in July… and now I have. Joni Lark is a songwriter, but she’s in a slump. She heads home to North Carolina for an extended vacation hoping that it will help her get out of her slump. But nothing is the same. Her best friend, Gigi, is kind of ignoring her, her parent’s business – a music venue called The Revelry – is going to be closing, and her mother’s memories are fading. Then she hears it – a song in her mind, and a man’s voice. They decide to meet hoping that if they finish the song together, they can get out of each other’s heads. But the sweet voice of the man in her head is really a gruff and rough musician. Maybe they were brought together for a reason.I’m going to be shouting from the rafters for a while about this book. It’s a love letter to music, to family, to following your dreams, and to love. Reading this book really did feel like being wrapped in a warm hug. Music has always been very important to me and I’ve always felt a strong connection to it. This book felt like it described how I felt. I’ve always felt that music is the greatest form of expression, as least for me. It can transport you to a moment of time instantaneously. Joni wanted to write a song that did just that. She wanted to write a song that made people feel.Joni and her family are close, but I understand her struggles with living far away from her family. She felt like they didn’t want to talk about the big important things – the things that matter. She felt like she didn’t really know what was going on. While I’ve never experienced what Joni did, I appreciated the author using her own experience to write about such a difficult topic – dementia. I can only imagine how hard it is to be the spouse or the daughter of a family member with that diagnosis. Now, let’s talk about the romance. UGH. My heart swooned SO hard. They were absolutely perfect for each other. I hated that Joni had so many walls up. I wanted to jump into the book, take her by the shoulders and shake her. I really liked the idea of them being able to hear each others inner thoughts. It is intimate and vulnerable. It brought these two closer. I loved that he had her call him a name that was so special to him, and that he gave her a nickname. He really was just so sweet. I want to date him!!!!This has easily become my absolute favorite Ashley Poston book, and it’s easily my top read of the year. I’ve connected with this book on another level. I laughed, I cried, and it will live rent free in my head. I think everyone needs to read this book.

I want a sequel!

Although the middle got a little slow, I loved the story and the characters. I love how the story transformed. This author’s books never disappoint!
