A captivating, bighearted, richly tapestried story of people brought together by love, war, art, flood, and the ghost of E. M. Forster, by the celebrated author of Tin Man.
Tuscany, 1944: As Allied troops advance and bombs sink villages, a young English soldier, Ulysses Temper, finds himself in the wine cellar of a deserted villa. There, he has a chance encounter with Evelyn Skinner, a middle-aged art historian intent on salvaging paintings from the ruins. In each other, Ulysses and Evelyn find a kindred spirit amidst the rubble of war-torn Italy, and paint a course of events that will shape Ulysses's life for the next four decades.
Returning home to London, Ulysses reimmerses himself in his crew at The Stoat and Parot--a motley mix of pub crawlers and eccentrics--all the while carrying with him his Italian evocations. So, when an unexpected inheritance brings him back to where it all began, Ulysses knows better than to tempt fate: he must return to the Tuscan hills.
With beautiful prose, extraordinary tenderness, and bursts of humor and light, Still Life is a sweeping portrait of unforgettable individuals who come together to make a family, and a deeply drawn celebration of beauty and love in all its forms.

I absolutely love this book! I’ve read it twice now.
A beautifully written love letter to Florence. A historical fiction that is deeply researched and spans most of the 20th century, but is focused the 40s through the mid 70s.My top favorite, Still Life by Sarah Winman would be fantastic in cinema.Please.
I laughed, I cried. I re-read paragraphs and sentences; simply wowed by the construction and word choices. To be savored. I’m sad it’s over but will definitely read again. And again. And I’m planning a trip to Florence, so there!
This book focuses on the experiences of a group of people who are unrelated and often quite different from one another whose long friendships lead them from World War II to the near present time and from London to Florence as each follows his or her destinies alone and together. It is very well written and one of those books that I wished would go and on when it came to an end.
EXCELLENT!It's exactly what I wanted, historic fiction based upon a group of fully realized and endearing characters that offers small but meaningful wisdoms on the families we create, the friendships we nurture, the power of small acts of courage to change lives, the need for art, and the beautiful sensuous details of life that make a life worth living and not to be taken for granted.
