INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
"This was a fun, stay-up-late-to-finish read! Elle and Parker have chemistry from the jump, but a combination of forced proximity and her hatred of him is fuel for witty banter, a long, slow burn and plenty of steam! I loved how Elle's true enemies-to-lovers journey is with New York City itself. Aster pays tribute to so many special NYC landmarks and experiences making the setting every bit a living character as the people in it." -- Abby Jimenez, #1 New York Times bestselling author
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Alex Aster comes her adult debut novel Summer in the City--a swoony, fast-paced rom-com set in New York City in which a screenwriter and a sexy tech CEO go from lovers to enemies and back to lovers again...
Twenty-seven-year-old screenwriter Elle has the chance of a lifetime to write a big-budget movie set in New York City. The only problem? She's had writer's block for months, and her screenplay is due at the end of the summer.
In a desperate attempt at inspiration, Elle ends up back in the city she swore she would never return to, in an apartment she could never afford (floor-to-ceiling windows, skyline views, and a new coffee shop to haunt included). It's the perfect place to write her screenplay...until she realizes her new neighbor is tech "Billionaire Bachelor" Parker Warren, her stairwell hookup from two years ago. It's been a lovers-to-enemies situation ever since.
When seeing him again turns into a full night of hate-fueled writing, Elle realizes her enemy/twisted muse might just be the key to finishing her screenplay... if she can stand being around her polar opposite. She writes anonymously, and he's on the cover of every business magazine. He frequents fancy red carpeted events, and she doesn't like leaving her emotional support five block radius.
One summer. One wall apart. He needs to fake a buzzy relationship during his company's precarious acquisition. She needs to write a movie around a list of NYC locations. Both need a break from their unrelenting schedules, and a chance to rediscover the skyscraper glimmering, pizza crusted, sunlit charms of the city.
Summers always end, and so will this agreement. It's all pretend. Promise.
Until it isn't.

Now, let me start by saying that 90% the book had me hooked and in love. Although you find your typical romance tropes, the story so, so romantic. Parker makes me consolidate my love for men written by women. But this story is not only a love story between a couple, it is also a love story to NYC. I live in New York and I could see vividly in my mind each place, each street, each building. It made me remember why I love the city so much. Aster was able to put down in paper what Manhattan is all about. With that being said, If it was because of Parker, I will give this book 5 starts. But because of Elle I am giving it 4 and that’s only because I started disliking it the last few chapters. I tried really hard to love the FMC but she was so annoying to me (sorry) I wanted to go into the page and shook her or something. That ending gave me second hand embarrassment for Parker. It really took away the spark and the high I was riding while reading this book.
Finally a man who YEARNS! I haven’t read a book with a man yearning for the FMC in so long but this one fits the description perfectly! The things this man did for her like buying her favorite coffee shop because they stopped making her favorite scones (which she was devastated about), and so many more things but I think my favorite thing he did was at the end of the book. It’s mentioned throughout the book that the FMC thinks flowers are beautiful but she hates them because they die and she has some trauma with that. This man gave her an engagement ring in the with the diamonds in the shape of a flower, one that wont ever die. So emotional!!Again I really loved this book. Elle drove me crazy at times but Parker made up for it. This one will be going into my favorites list!
Good, but not great. Maybe I’m falling out of love with romance? I liked it, but it didn’t call to me when I was away from it. Written well and had some witty moments but the FMC irked me frequently and the MMC just bought whatever, whenever, and it felt forced. I haven’t read billionaire romances before, though. Cute, and I’ll definitely see the movie. Just wasn’t in love.
I absolutely loved this book. It is about loss and the grieving process but so much more. It is about misunderstanding what the person who died meant and how to find happiness after the death. On the positive note, it is about finding your person. The person who totally understands you but also makes mistakes along the way. It is about growing and learning to love yourself as you fall in love with another while you are finally accepting your loss and decide to make decisions for yourself and not the decision that your deceased person would have wanted or you think they would have wanted.Like the story, I too grew from reading it. I learned more about myself along the way. This author is impactful and I will be looking up anything else she writes. Definitely 100% recommend. Grab the book and get on the emotional roller coaster and just enjoy the ride.
Spoilerso close to being a 5 star read, the third act break up drove me absolutely insane in this story. Otherwise, great chemistry between the main characters. Great tension and plot.
