#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - John Grisham returns to the iconic setting of his first novel, A Time to Kill, as Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a controversial trial that exposes a tortured history of racial tension.
"Welcome back, Jake. . . . [Brigance] is one of the most fully developed and engaging characters in all of Grisham's novels."--USA Today
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy white man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and defense attorney Jake Brigance into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier.
The second will raises many more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?

Sycamore Row brings back Jake Brigance for another messy, high-stakes case — this time involving a handwritten will, a suspicious suicide, and a lot of buried history. It’s slower in some parts, but the legal drama and moral tension keep it interesting. Grisham digs into race, legacy, and justice without overdoing it. Not his flashiest book, but definitely one that sticks with you.
I don't know why, but "To Renee" left me with so many thoughts of opening wounds so others can "see" so that they can be healed. And to me, that is what this book was about. An injury that was so horrible that changed the course of lives that was healed by the laying bare the wound. And giving the wound space and Lettie's grace to heal it...
One of Grisham's best. One of the best descriptions of lawyer and trial deliberations set in the south. To Kill a Mockingbird comes to mind.
I was engaged the whole time. I love Jake Brigance and his crew. I never thought a story about a will would be so captivating!
I loved A Time To Kill. The story was compelling. The characters were realistic and in the end I felt like the story came to a good conclusion. Sycamore Row was the same way only very different. I could see the characters in my head, hear their voices and feel their emotions. This story twisted and turned more than most and for about half the book, I thought I had the ending all figured out. As it turns out, not so much. I love it when that happens. So few stories surprise me. It was delightful the way this ended and I can't wait to read the 3rd Jake Brigance book.
