For fans of The Ministry of Time and The Midnight Library, a sweeping, unforgettable novel following two remarkable women moving between postwar and Cold War-era America and the mysterious time space, a library filled with books containing the memories of those who bore witness to history.

Enter the time space, a soaring library filled with books containing the memories of those have passed and accessed only by specially made watches once passed from father to son--but mostly now in government hands. This is where eleven-year-old Lisavet Levy finds herself trapped in 1938, waiting for her watchmaker father to return for her. When he doesn't, she grows up among the books and specters, able to see the world only by sifting through the memories of those who came before her. As she realizes that government agents are entering the time space to destroy books and maintain their preferred version of history, she sets about saving these scraps in her own volume of memories. Until the appearance of an American spy named Ernest Duquesne in 1949 offers her a glimpse of the world she left behind, setting her on a course to change history and possibly the time space itself.

In 1965, sixteen-year-old Amelia Duquesne is mourning the disappearance of her uncle Ernest when an enigmatic CIA agent approaches her to enlist her help in tracking down a book of memories her uncle had once sought. But when Amelia visits the time space for the first time, she realizes that the past--and the truth--might not be as linear as she'd like to believe.

Perfect for fans of The Midnight Library and The Ministry of Time, The Book of Lost Hours explores time, memory, and what we sacrifice to protect those we love.

I loved the richly developed characters, the heartfelt love story, and the way the narrative moved between eras, weaving history with the mystery of the time space. The writing was beautiful, and the twists kept me hooked. The beginning felt a bit slow and the time travel rules could be confusing, but the emotional depth, surprises, and satisfying ending made it well worth the read. A captivating story for those who enjoy historical fiction with a magical twist.

Really great work of historical fiction mixed with other genres….

Really great work of historical fiction, time travel with a hinge of mysticism. I also really enjoyed the dual timelines which keep you sucked into this. Lisavet as the FMC was a wonderful delight! Her heartfelt journey transcended throughout this entire book and the other supporting characters especially Amelia, Lisavet and Ernest, made this unforgettable. The love story between Lisavet and Ernest will pull on your heartstrings even if you’re not the biggest romance fan. This book isn’t too long and it doesn’t leave you with more questions than answers. If you enjoy multiple timelines, time travel, historical fiction with heart and a romance all combined…the you will definitely enjoy this read! Also if you enjoyed The Midnight Library or The Time Travelers Wife, I think this is similar to them.

Interesting story

I am always intrigued by time travel type novels, but also find myself befuddled by them at the same time. It makes my brain hurt a bit.The Book of Lost Hours definitely has an interesting and original concept and overall the magical realism aspects are very well done. I was hooked from the start and the entire book kept my attention throughout. The novel really delves deep into the power of memory and the ways our stories and personal and collective histories form who we are. The story was thought-provoking without being overly heavy-handed in its message. I loved the romance element as well as the threads connecting the characters throughout the different timelines. The ending has me scratching my head a bit; I will admit - it was moving and emotional, but I'm not sure I totally get it. But that's okay. I still enjoyed the ride and I think most readers that enjoy this type of story will love this one.

A masterpiece of historical fiction!

This book was a masterpiece. Lisavet was real, vulnerable, and flawed in ways that so many people can connect with. always willing to do whatever it takes to protect the ones she loves the most. someone who would rip apart the entirety of a constructed time dimension is someone I'd love on my side. shifting between the time lines until they merged was a touch that actually built the twists and surprises this story threw at me. now in my post reading state I'm sitting here thinking about that destroyed library of human memory and what a place like that would be like and how, much like Lisavet, I’d probably not want to leave either. if you’re worried about this going in a bad way i can promise there is a happy ending, it’s not happy for everyone, but this family that you grow to know and love, they come out on the other side of this war for the memories of the world. I think I'd place this firmly in alternate history/science fiction genres. it plays as a tragedy, an alternate history, a drama, a mystery of sorts, a love story. it really ticks all of the boxes for a something i wasn’t entirely sure was going to be a book i enjoyed, i usually go for stories with heavy romance plots and this has a subplot of romance mixed into a time travelling adventure through the memories of the people who came before us. it’s beautifully written and i have a lot to say but it’ll spoil the plot, go get your hands on this to experience it for yourself.

History, Love, Magic—All in One!

The Book of Lost Hours completely captivated me in the best of ways. I was sucked in from the beginning. Lisavet’s story is one that is intriguing in the beginning, but later becomes hopeful and then sad at times. Ernest, the male main character, is really likable too! The suspense that is within the pages of the story unfolding kept me excited to pick it back up nightly to read! There’s love, history, and magic all over in this book. This was my first read from this author, but I will instantly pick up new ones and want to now read her old ones. Thanks NetGalley for the early read!!!
