Ella Bermanβs The Comeback aims to be a powerful and timely story of a young actress reclaiming her life after years of manipulation by a predatory Hollywood director. Grace Turnerβs journeyβreturning to LA after a year of self-imposed exile and confronting the man who controlled herβhas all the makings of a compelling #MeToo-era narrative. Unfortunately, while the book tackles important themes, its execution leaves much to be desired. The biggest issue is pacingβGraceβs internal monologue dominates the novel, often meandering in circles without much forward momentum. While her trauma is realistically depicted, the repetitive nature of her self-destructive tendencies makes the book feel sluggish rather than emotionally gripping. Thereβs little real suspense or urgency, which weakens the impact of what should be a cathartic, empowering journey.Additionally, the supporting characters, including Graceβs friends and family, feel underdeveloped, making it hard to feel truly invested in her relationships. Even the climax, which should be a moment of reckoning, feels somewhat muted and predictable.
This book was a huge flop. This could have had so much potential it but it was just flat out boring. So disappointing, donβt waste your time
