#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - In this "grab-a-reader-by-the-shoulders suspense story" (The Washington Post) from "the master of the legal thriller" (USA Today), an innocent man is about to be executed--and only a guilty man can save him.
WINNER OF THE HARPER LEE PRIZE FOR LEGAL FICTION
For every innocent man sent to prison, there is a guilty one left on the outside. He doesn't understand how the police and prosecutors got the wrong man, and he certainly doesn't care. He just can't believe his good luck, content to allow an innocent person to go to prison, to serve hard time, even to be executed.
Travis Boyette is such a man. In the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted DontΓ© Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.
Now nine years have passed. Travis has just been paroled in Kansas for a different crime; DontΓ© is four days away from his execution. Travis suffers from an inoperable brain tumor. For the first time in his miserable life, he decides to do what's right and confess. But how can a guilty man convince lawyers, judges, and politicians that they're about to execute an innocent man?

I can honestly say I didnβt know where this story would go, but I have to say. I throughly enjoyed it all. Iβm finding I really like books that make you enjoy the story as well as think about how it can be applied (a weird self examination through the story) I find maybe people who like their character can either relate or see the point of view the characters do and think about the information the author is speaking about. In fear of spoiling too much, it is speaking on the wrong man getting the death penalty and made me look at both sides of not just the guilty party but the individuals that were innocent and how they responded. Yes, itβs a fictional world with fictional people, but it still makes you think. Especially if you were the innocent man or his family members.Iβm not a political person, I personally stay away from it as much as possible. Donβt get me wrong I love my country, but to talk about it bores and makes me cringe. I will say this story truly made me enjoy Pas. Kenith and the morals he portrayed to find the truth and stop an innocent man from dying.
Recently, some of the Grisham novels seem written by ghost writers. This was good. This is him. His passion and style comes through and as an opponent to the death penalty, I think the mechanics of what can go wrong are evident.
Emotional, informative, insightful and gripping. One of the best books I ever read. Definitely one of the best written by John Grisham.
I'm a fan of John Grisham, who isn't? This was my first read though. I have seen all the movies adapted from what I can only imagine are equally as fantastic manuscripts if they are anything like this book. I found the characters fully developed and interesting. The story was riveting. I spent every spare moment of my usually very busy days, reading just one more page. I rooted for the hero, cried, cheered for the good guys, screamed at the ignorant officials and of course cried for the victims. This book was so much more exciting than a movie might have been. Your imagination has to work a little harder when reading the written word, so you get to see it in your minds eye like no one else can. Great read! I highly recommend this story!
I recently purchased this hardcover (used) at a really great price. I'm gradually collecting every Grisham novel and reading (or re-reading) them in sequence. I only have a few to go... and haven't been disappointed yet.
