An original short story anthology based on master storyteller Stephen King's #1 New York Times bestselling classic The Stand!
Since its initial publication in 1978, The Stand has been considered Stephen King's seminal masterpiece of apocalyptic fiction, with millions of copies sold and adapted twice for television. Although there are other extraordinary works exploring the unraveling of human society, none have been as influential as this iconic novel--generations of writers have been impacted by its dark yet ultimately hopeful vision of the end and new beginning of civilization, and its stunning array of characters.
Now for the first time, Stephen King has fully authorized a return to the harrowing world of The Stand through this original short story anthology as presented by award-winning authors and editors Christopher Golden and Brian Keene. Bringing together some of today's greatest and most visionary writers, The End of the World As We Know It features unforgettable, all-new stories set during and after (and some perhaps long after) the events of The Stand--brilliant, terrifying, and painfully human tales that will resonate with readers everywhere as an essential companion to the classic, bestselling novel.
Featuring an introduction by Stephen King, a foreword by Christopher Golden, and an afterword by Brian Keene. Contributors include Wayne Brady and Maurice Broaddus, Poppy Z. Brite, Somer Canon, C. This was the greatest idea. So lovely to read new voices from the world of The Stand.
I agree with the previous reviewer, the stories were very hit or miss. The stand resonated with so many readers because of the spirituality expressed. Some of the authors embraced the sense of awe embodied in the Stand. Most did not. Very little of it tied back to the original. I agree that i don’t believe many of these authors read the original. Some of it I enjoyed. But if you’re a lover of the original be prepared to be disappointed.
I’m just happy I can be back in the world of the Stand, even if some of the details aren’t perfectly aligned with the book. I did notice that some of the stories in the first section used the First version set in the late seventies and others used the re-edited version updated to the nineties. But it’s all good: there are many levels in the Tower.I bought the hard cover book but I’m considering purchasing the ebook with the discounted audiobook—the only problem there being I wouldn’t OWN anything digital except the rights, which isn’t the same as owning the copy outright like I do with the physical copy.Anyway, I thank the editors for getting the permission and getting the project done with such a collection of wonderful writers. Kudos!
This collection is hit or miss. Some authors don’t seem to have read The Stand or are deliberately changing key details from the original book. The epidemic was over in the US in two weeks, people got sick fast or slow but everyone who wasn’t immune died by July 2nd. That’s canon. Changing those details would have been fine if these stories were inspired by The Stand but the authors billed this book as taking place “in the same universe.” It is sloppy writing and sloppy editing not to fix basic disagreements between the novel and these stories. Maybe I’m too picky but details matter, canon matters and these stories should have been free of continuity errors. It’s disappointing to me that they are not. If you’re a fan of The Stand who can disregard this, you’ll like the book. I will finish it, of course, but I felt disrespected as a reader by errors.
I like it so far, I dont love it, but I like it a lot. Some of the stories read kind of like fan fiction to me, but pretty good fan fiction at that lol. The stand is my favorite book of all time so admittedly the bar is set kind of high for me and nothing will ever compare but this is a fun read. I would reccomend it.
