#1 New York Times Instant Bestseller
In Kristin Hannah's The Great Alone, a desperate family seeks a new beginning in the near-isolated wilderness of Alaska only to find that their unpredictable environment is less threatening than the erratic behavior found in human nature.
Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America's last true frontier.
Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents' passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.
In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers' lack of preparation and dwindling resources.
But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt's fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

This book pulled me right in. The way Alaska is written, it feels like its own character…wild, beautiful, and brutal all at once. Leni’s story, growing up in such a chaotic home, was heartbreaking but also showed so much strength. It’s heavy at times, raw and emotional, but the thread of hope running through it makes it unforgettable. Definitely one of those books that sticks with you long after you’re done.
I could not put this book down. The characters grab you and take hold. I literally did not want to stop to eat or sleep. Alaska is home to me and I loved reading the description of it through the authors characters eyes and seeing how the each of them were changed by the wildness of it.
Alaska with all its pristine beauty, unbridled wildness and grandeur also hides challenges and tests that even the strongest of us all can reflect on, which helps to build our character and strengthen our resolve to persevere in life. This was a compelling novel that tested everything that Alaska had to offer. It was a hard book to put down.
The book was recommended to me by a friend who thought I would find it relatable. I felt a deep connection to Leni and her mother Cora. This is a stunning story of trauma, intense fear and desperation, courage and perseverance. I can't wait to see the movie.
This book is so amazing I can't even put it into words. I could have read another 500 pages! Kristin Hannah never fails and her way words and story telling is so unique.
