Janice Hallett, "the new queen of crime" (Electric Literature), returns with a fresh, edge-of-your-seat mystery that takes place at a pub's weekly trivia night, revealed through quiz categories, phone messages, and email correspondence.
Sue and Mal Eastwood run an isolated rural pub called The Case is Altered where a weekly trivia game has revived its flagging fortunes--that is, until a body is found in the nearby river. Soon after, a mysterious new team arrives and shakes up the diverse field of regulars by scoring top marks in every round...every week.
Meanwhile, Sue and Mal have a secret of their own. Before arriving here, they were caught up in a secret police operation which meant they had to leave town--and whatever happened back then seems to have finally caught up with them.
Five years later, the pub lies derelict, and their nephew Dominic is determined to make a documentary about their story. What happened at this unassuming pub? And can a single question really kill?

It pops back and forth from older year to current so you have to pay attention. Clues are throughout, but subtle. The climax at the end when the people are revealed is well done. I thought it was a fun read.
This book was written in a fascinating style. Text messages. Emails. Transcripts of interview notes. Not a word of traditional dialogue or narrative. In fact, it struck me as more of an epistolary novel just told in today’s epistolary forms. At first, I wasn’t sure I’d like it. Instead, I found myself pulled in. I also was surprised all the way to the end with twist. I didn’t anticipate. I thought I knew where the story was going, but I was wrong. This will not be the last novel I read from this author. I definitely enjoyed this page Turner of a mystery. And the setting in a pub with quizzes it was quite fun.
Unique writing style.Colorful characters. Many unexpected twists. You won’t find me in a pub or any other place participating in quizzes/trivia. 😆Extremely clever!
Another Hallett winner! A bit slow and repetitive here and there but clever, funny and as always skewers modern life.
I truly enjoyed this audiobook!
