The remarkable next novel from Matt Haig, the author of #1 New York Times bestseller The Midnight Library, with more than nine million copies sold worldwide

"What looks like magic is simply a part of life we don't understand yet..."

When retired math teacher Grace Winters is left a run-down house on a Mediterranean island by a long-lost friend, curiosity gets the better of her. She arrives in Ibiza with a one-way ticket, no guidebook and no plan.

Among the rugged hills and golden beaches of the island, Grace searches for answers about her friend's life, and how it ended. What she uncovers is stranger than she could have dreamed. But to dive into this impossible truth, Grace must first come to terms with her past.

Filled with wonder and wild adventure, this is a story of hope and the life-changing power of a new beginning.

Layers and connections!

I liked the story because it touched on so many different topics and somehow stayed connected. A powerful story about living and life in general.

A Fun and Satisfying Read that Ultimately Left Me Uplifted and Inspired.

I'm a longtime fan of Matt Haig’s writing, and I was so confident I’d enjoy this novel that I bought it without even reading the description. It didn't disappoint. The story opens with a brief letter from a young man to a former teacher who had a profound impact on his life. What follows is her response—a sprawling, fantastical recounting of magical experiences from her recent years. I won’t spoil the plot details; discovering them as they unfold is part of the charm.Haig’s prose is warm, conversational, and deeply personal, shaped by the intimacy of one character writing directly to another. Through her story, she reflects not just on what happened, but on why life remains precious and filled with wonder, even when the world is imperfect. As in other Matt Haig novels, the magic here is subtle and grounded—woven into the fabric of everyday reality rather than built into an entirely separate world. There’s no elaborate world-building, just an invitation to suspend disbelief and ask, “what if?”For me, this was a fun and satisfying read that ultimately left me uplifted and inspired.

Adored it

I haven't been moved by a book like this in a long time , and I read a lot. Starts a little slowly , a little heavy - I found myself repeatedly wondering where the story was going. It definitely didn't go places I expected. I am 72 , so that struck a chord as well. The story is about EVERYTHING , loss, feelings, relationships , love , environmentalism, the interconnectedness of all life , math , patterns , respect , magic , growing old , and memories. This is not " light " reading. I fully intend to read it again. I really love this book , best in a long time also for the writing itself. Fully formed , structurally correct sentences , no confusion about who is speaking , well developed characters , and intelligent discussions by the main character. Thank you , Mr. Haig!
