The Nature of the Beast is a New York Times bestselling Chief Inspector Gamache novel from Louise Penny.
Hardly a day goes by when nine year old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. From alien invasions, to walking trees, to winged beasts in the woods, to dinosaurs spotted in the village of Three Pines, his tales are so extraordinary no one can possibly believe him. Including Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache, who now live in the little Quebec village.
But when the boy disappears, the villagers are faced with the possibility that one of his tall tales might have been true.
And so begins a frantic search for the boy and the truth. What they uncover deep in the forest sets off a sequence of events that leads to murder, leads to an old crime, leads to an old betrayal. Leads right to the door of an old poet.
And now it is now, writes Ruth Zardo. And the dark thing is here.
A monster once visited Three Pines. And put down deep roots. And now, Ruth knows, it is back.
Armand Gamache, the former head of homicide for the S»reté du Québec, must face the possibility that, in not believing the boy, he himself played a terrible part in what happens next.

The best one yet. Inspector Gamache is even more intuitive as a retired presence. I was sorry to find out that Gamache did have weaknesses.
I didn’t love this book at first. In fact I read it twice. The first time last year then I picked it up again this year. As in all her books Ms Penny weaved her words around you until you can’t let go and must read every word until the very end.I loved the new discoveries and observations I found in not only reading this book but in its re-reading.
A huge gun as big as a house with a wondrous beast, a monster on it! That was the story the little boy who lived in his imagination shouted in the bistro. And from that shout that almost no one believed came an international espionage plot, dead bodies and a.new group of people finding their way to Three Pines. A compelling story with twists and information about the people of Three Pines never before told.
An unbelievable but true story. Very scary making you wonder what else we don’t know about what goes on in govt & military circles
It took me FOUR DAYS near the end of this book. You can cut the tension with a knife. I'm not going to spill any beans, but I will say this is one of the best in this series. You won't regret the time you spend with this book.
